ACLU of GA

Dear ACLU of Georgia Supporter,

Call you legislator!

These bills are on the fast track to becoming laws. They have passed either the House or Senate and  could be presented on the floor for a vote any day. Today is Legislative Day 36 leaving only 4 session days left to make your voice heard.  It is crucial that you contact your Senator or Representative and let them know that you oppose these bills.

Requirement to Drug Test Applicants for Temporary Assistance (SB 292) - FACT SHEET

Call Your Representative  This legislation is based on the myth that large numbers of our neediest citizens are using public benefits to purchase illegal drugs. This would require that all applicants seeking temporary assistance for needy families or Medicaid benefits submit to a drug test. The applicant seeking temporary assistance will be forced to pay for the drug test. A federal judge in Florida found a similar statute to be unconstitutional(OPPOSE)

Abortion Ban at 20 Weeks After Conception (HB 954)) - FACT SHEET

Call Your Senator  This bill would ban all abortions at 20 weeks after conception unless the abortion is necessary to "avert the death of the pregnant women or avert serious risk of substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman." No exceptions are made for the general physical and mental health of the woman, and no exceptions are allowed in cases of rape or incest. (OPPOSE)

Ban on Public Higher Education, Denying Immigrants Access to Water/Sewage Services and the Right to Marry (SB 458) - FACT SHEET

Call your Representative   SB 458 not only would ban undocumented students from all public universities and colleges in Georgia, thus forcing high-achieving students who are paying their own way to leave the state in pursuit of a higher education, but it would also import one of the most controversial and most burdensome aspects of Alabama's law.  The bill would essentially deny many immigrants: water and sewage service provided by local governments, access to municipal buildings requiring ID, the ability to enroll in elementary schools requiring proof of ID, and even the ability to marry which is a fundamental right under the US Constitution.

Requirement to Participate in "Personal Growth Activities" in Exchange for Food Stamps and Temporary Assistance (SB 312)

Call Your Representative   This bill would require applicants for food stamps and TANF to enroll in "personal growth activities," which may include GED classes, technical education classes, adult literacy classes, or "self-development" classes. This applies to applicants who are working less than 30 hours per week. (OPPOSE)
