An estimated 5.3 million citizens cannot vote as a result of felony convictions, and nearly 4 million of those citizens have been released from prison and are living and working in the community.
Congressional action is needed to establish a uniform standard that restores voting rights in federal elections to the millions of Americans who are living and working in the community, but continue to be denied their ability to fully participate in civic life.
As the Supreme Court has said, "[n]o right is more precious in a free country than that of having a voice in the election of those who make the laws under which, as good citizens, we must live. Other rights, even the most basic, are illusory if the right to vote is undermined."
On Monday, November 1, 2010, the day before Election Day, people across the country wil urge the passage of the Democracy Restoration Act (S.1516 and H.R.3335) by calling their Members of Congress to ask them to support passage of the bill. We hope that you will join us in making these critical calls.
Please call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. The Switchboard can direct you to your Congressional Representative and Senators. Once you reach the office, you can use the talking points below or share your own story:
MESSAGE:
· I am calling because I am concerned that over 4 million Americans living in our communities will be denied the right to vote in tomorrow's federal elections.
· The Democracy Restoration Act would strengthen our democracy by restoring voting rights to people previously barred from participating in federal elections because of a criminal conviction.
· Voting is the most basic act of citizenship. This bill would create a more just system of voter participation, encourage engagement in civic life, assist with reintegration, and help rebuild ties to the community.
· I urge you to support and co-sponsor this legislation.
