Leamos and Colorful Hands Graduation

It's graduation time!  New Futures is proud to celebrate our participants as they wrap up another successful school year.  Two of these celebrations recently took place at our Heights of Burien and Windsor Heights sites.

Leamos Graduation

Graduates were asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and wore sashes naming their future professions as they walked the 'red carpet'.

Leamos (Let's Read), the early learning   program at the Heights, and Colorful Hands, the early program at Windsor, are helping children in our community build skills that they will be expected to have when entering school.  Our programs are preparing kids for kindergarten and teaching parents to become involved in their child's education early.

Colorful Hands

Colorful Hands graduates sing songs for their families and friends before receiving their certificates.

New Futures Honors 2011 Scholars

At the New Futures Sixth Annual Get Inspired! Benefit Breakfast on May 4th, emceed by KIRO's Angela Russell, four New Futures participants were each honored with a $1,500 scholarship for higher education. Says New Futures Executive Director,

The 2011 Scholars, all students in middle or high school in the Highline School District, were Cesilia Arciga, Monica Mendez, Israel Salmeron, and Ashley Vennes.

Their scholarships were provided through the generosity of Comcast, Seattle Sounders FC, Community Health Plan of Washington, and the Latino Civic Alliance. You can read more about the scholars here.

GiveBig

Thank you for your efforts to make GiveBIG a success.  Seattle Foundation was able to raise more than $3.5 million for approximately 900 nonprofits in our community in only 17 hours!  On June 24th, our supporters gave generously, helping New Futures to raise $5,460 to be matched.  Thank you!

Mario Paredes Honored by Highline Community College

Mario Award

Dr. Jack Bermingham (left), President of Highline Community College, presents Mario Paredes with his certificate

On April 27th, New Futures Executive Director Mario Paredes was honored by Highline Community College at its Networking Breakfast. Dr. Jack Bermingham, President of the College, recognized Mario for his leadership and tireless dedication to serving the Latino Community in South King County.

Each year Dr. Bermingham recruits a group of community advisers to nominate and select individuals in South King County who stand out and deserve recognition for their contributions to the South King County. Congratulations, Mario!

Currently, New Futures and Highline Community College collaborate in many ways. For example, College staff teach ESL classes on-site at New Futures, and the College grants continuing education credits to participants in New Futures' cultural competency trainings.
