News from the South Africa

The following is an excerpt of the most recent South Africa newsletter, written by Karen Vickers

And so we find ourselves in the Western Cape a little more than half way through the OTS Fall 2010 programme! The students are currently busy sampling tidal pools and working hard on their History and Culture essays, but the time has come to fill you all in on the adventures of the past 4 weeks as the students have been to several exciting locations since Punda Maria where we last left you.

Lioness

From Punda Maria we traveled an epic 11 hours in the Game Drive Vehicles (GDV's) through the park to reach Skukuza Rest Camp in southern Kruger. It was a tranquil (but chilly) start with little game or bird activity, but as the day broke and the air got warmer, we had some fantastic sightings including the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, white rhino, lion and leopard)! As we drove along the tar road late in the afternoon, a pride of four lion were spotted just a few meters from the car (3 females and a male). We sat and watched for a short while until one lioness stood up and took a sudden interest in the riverbed below. Next thing we knew the lioness took off at top speed, and in a blur chased something about 15 m up into a dead tree! A leopard! The lioness scrambled about half way up before losing her grip and falling to the ground. Lions possess a notorious distaste for leopards, as they often compete for prey. And so the lioness sat at the base of the tree that held the stranded leopard, and eventually the rest of the pride came to anxiously await the leopards' descent. A few minutes later we saw a younger leopard crouching in some tall grass watching the events unfold. We watched him for about 15 minutes before he slunk off into tall vegetation and left the scene unscathed... This was by far the highlight of the day's trip and an extremely rare thing to see!
