Corporate Volunteers Provide Service to Stations and Gain Understanding of Environmental Issues

The OTS Corporate Days Program, launched in July 2009, provides the employees of Costa Rican businesses with an opportunity to participate in environmental conservation through volunteer work at our three biological stations. The employees also gain new skills, learn about environmental issues and the work being done by OTS.

BAC VolunteersSince its inception, the Corporate Days Program has brought over 2,100 volunteers from 5 corporations to the OTS stations. These corporations include BAC San José, Procter and Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer,Inc., and Florida Ice and Farm. The collective efforts of their employees has resulted in the planting of more than 7000 native tree species (over two dozen species) in the Biological Corridor close to La Selva Biological Station. They also performed other work in all three stations, including trail and building maintenance, and eradication of invasive species, among others.

Feedback from the corporations has been very positive. Several administrators have commented that after participating in this volunteer effort and receiving a guided tour of the stations, many workers exhibit a higher sensitivity towards the environment, and are more prone to conserving water and energy and to recycle in the work place.

Here are a few examples of completed projects by corporate volunteers:
  • Preparation and cleaning of drain stations
  • Clean windows
  • Painted recycling centers
  • Cleaning, mowing, green areas and parking station
  • Cleaning of ceilings
  • Clean and painted MINAET hostel
  • Marking and cleaning PVNP three paths
  • Cleaning the camping areas
OTS wishes to thank all of the corporations and their employees for participating in this unique program.
