Graduate Research Funds Available for U.S. Graduate Students at Palo Verde in Costa Rica
OTS has NSF funds available for U.S. graduate students to conduct research in Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica.
The OTS-International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) Program provides a unique, intensive opportunity for field research to graduate students from throughout the United States.
Sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation's Office of International Science and Engineering, the OTS-IRES program is designed for graduate students in biology or related fields interested in conducting field research under the supervision of experienced tropical ecologists from Costa Rica. Students will be funded fully to participate in a ten-week research program at Palo Verde Biological Station in the Tempisque lowlands of Costa Rica. Working in close coordination with their Advisor and Costa Rican mentors, students will design, conduct, and analyze a field research project at Palo Verde and provide a formal presentation of results at the end of the ten-week program. The program will give students a first-hand look at the challenges and rewards of research in dry forest ecology and water resource management.
The OTS IRES award covers the cost of room and board for up to 10 weeks and local and international travel to and from Costa Rica.
Participants receive a stipend of $350 per week to help cover living expenses and costs of field equipment.
Applications will be evaluated in order of the date of submission completion (all parts of application received) and acceptance to the program will be announced on a rolling admissions basis. All applicants must send an official hard copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
Application deadline: February 1st , 2010 Selections Announced: Approximately one month after application is submitted.

EQUIPMENT SUPPORT FOR THE FUNDAMENTALS OF TROPICAL BIOLOGY GRADUATE COURSE
Since 1964, the Organization for Tropical Studies has offered the fundamentals of Tropical Biology graduate level course, one of the most prestigious and successful programs promoting graduate students in the pursuit of tropical research. This is a "hands-on" field course with a broad scope of tropical biology. Therefore, the implementation of numerous field projects requires a wide variety of materials. Because of the number of courses and frequency with which they are run, the equipment at the students' disposal can quickly become rundown. OTS is committed to offering this course for many years to come, so we ask you to consider supporting this extraordinary effort by making a donation of any extra new or gently used lab and/or field supplies that you may have in your own lab. Our students will greatly appreciate your support.
If you would like to make a donation, please open the following link for the list of equipment needed: Tropical Biology Equipment List
If you have equipment you can contribute, please contact Barbara Lewis at blewis@ots.ac.cr |
