Semester Abroad in Costa Rica Global Health: Tropical Medicine and Public Health:
The program examines the relationship between ecology and tropical
disease, epidemiology, and public health. Students will study topics
including vector ecology, infectious diseases, water quality and
health, socialized medicine, and traditional and alternative medicine. Spring 2010 : Jan 18 - May 4
Tropical Biology Semester:
This course integrates field and classroom instruction to introduce
students to the fundamental principles of tropical ecology. Costa Rica,
with its diverse array of tropical ecosystems, provides a perfect
context in which to study first hand the biological complexity of the

Course Syllabus
South Africa Semester African ECOLOGY & CONSERVATION: You will take four core courses: South African Ecosystems and
Diversity, Field Research in Savanna Ecology, Conservation and
Management of Protected Areas in South Africa, and History and Culture
of South Africa. Science courses will be taught by Duke and OTS faculty
and distinguished visiting scientists. Prominent South African
historians, artists, and cultural theorists will lead the course on
History and Culture of South Africa. The program is physically and
intellectually demanding, stressing full immersion in hands-on

2009 OTS Outstanding Student Paper Award
The OTS Institutional Membership Committee is pleased to announce the first annual
OTS Outstanding Student Paper Award. We are inviting nominations for a
$500 cash prize for excellence in research via an outstanding
publication in tropical biology by a student.
***THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15th, 2009. ***
ELIGIBILITY
AND NOMINATION: At the time of the nomination deadline, the paper must
be published in a peer-reviewed journal and the work completed within
the tropics. To be eligible, the author must have been a student
(undergraduate or graduate) when the research was completed and must
meet one of the following criteria: be an OTS alum, or have completed
the work at an OTS research station (La Selva, Las Cruces, Palo Verde),
or be a student at an OTS member institution (CLICK HERE to view a current list of OTS Institutional
Members). The nominee must be first author and the
paper must be on a topic directly related to their research in tropical
biology and published in the 18 months before the award deadline.
Nominations by research advisors or colleagues are welcomed. SELECTION
CRITERIA: Applications will be reviewed by an Awards Committee formed
by a subcommittee of the AoD Membership Committee. Papers will be
judged based upon the paper's contribution to the field including
originality, study design and impact. The nomination packets should
include:
A brief letter describing the impact of the paper on the field.
