Join OTS on an amazing trip to Caño Negro and Rio Celeste!

LS BugCaño Negro's wetlands are located in the northern zone of Costa Rica, close to the small village of Los Chiles in the Province of Alajuela. Caño Negro, mainly conformed by the Caño Negro Lagoon and the Rio Frio is one of the most important biological areas of the country.

Caño Negro Wild Life Refuge is the natural habitat of more than 350 species of birds, as well as the emerald basilisk, iguanas, river turtles, caimans and jaguars.

LS BugRio Celeste or Light Blue River is a winding body of water surrounded by rainforest in the Tenorio Volcano National Park. It sports one of Costa Rica's most beautiful waterfalls and natural hot springs, as well as the unique phenomenon of clear water turning blue. This chemical reaction is caused by a constant flow of minerals supplied by the volcano.

A trip to Rio Celeste involves a pleasant, yet somewhat challenging, hike through the cool rainforest of the Tenorio Volcano National Park. The hike will last about an hour and a half before reaching the Rio Celeste Waterfall. Visitors take time here to enjoy the beauty of this gorgeous cascading water crashing into the baby blue swimming hole below. The lush green tropical surroundings top off one of most aesthetically-pleasing views in all of Costa Rica.

Medicinal plants at Las Cruces
By Alejandra Zuñiga

MedicinalSoon Las Cruces will have a medicinal plant garden as part of a project coordinated by Ariadna Sánchez, who is in charge of the Environmental Education Program at the station.

The plan is to plant two gardens: one in Las Cruces and the other in a neighboring cooperative, Coopepueblos, with the support of student volunteers and the Community Agroecology Network (CAN) Another objective is to involve senior citizens both in researching the use of medicinal plants and in the planting and caring for the garden. Ariadna explained that, although this project is only starting, they already have some plants and are working on the garden's design and soil.
