THANK YOU!!!! |
The Clinic is both happy and grateful for the generous grants from:
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois
VNA Foundation
Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation
Westlake Foundation |
SPRING ANNUAL FUND |
The 2010 Spring Annual Fund Campaign was a wonderful success. Thanks to co-chairs, Julie McKune (IWS member) and Mary Beth McIntosh (community leader), a fantastic committee was recruited that brought many new faces to the Clinic. In total, the Fund raised over $60,000 from more than 135 gifts! The average gift size was $160! Special thanks to the matching donors of the campaign:
Anonymous Donor
Leah & Paul Beckwith
Dawn & Harmon Brown
Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest
Good Heart Work Smart Foundation
Chatka & Tony Ruggiero
Thanks to all who contributed to the Campaign. The Spring Annual Fund Campaign is the largest mail appeal for the Clinic. The Fund supports the general operations of the Clinic - dollars raised go directly to offset $250,000 in services provided to patients that are not fully covered by the state's insurance plan. |
HOLIDAY HOUSEWALK SIGNATURE PLATE |
This year The Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society is excited to introduce the 2010 Holiday Housewalk Signature Plate. Beautifully crafted with recycled glass, the plate is a stunning piece with the etching of the Holiday Housewalk tree. The plate will be available for purchase for $45 at the Holiday Housewalk Market with a portion of the proceeds to support The Children's Clinic.

| Dental Students Sara Abdel Kader and Tariq Riyal |
NEW STUDENTS & TECHNOLOGY FOR THE DENTAL TEAM! | In mid-October, University of Illinois Chicago's Dental School administration recommended The Children's Clinic to the National Children's Oral Health Foundation to be the recipient of a new chair-side x-ray machine. According to Dr. Jill Baskin, the Clinic's Oral Health Director, the new equipment will be used to support two pediatric dental chairs and replace an older x-ray unit in one of the dental suites.
This summer, the Clinic's dental staff was joined by four of the 13 new dental students from University of Illinois Chicago who will all complete a five-week training rotation at the Clinic. All of the dental students are in their final year of dental school. Tariq Riyal, a current student noted, "This rotation has been an amazing experience. Prior to this training, I was unsure if I wanted to treat children. I've learned so many new techniques from the doctors in working with pediatric patients. And, in fact, my outlook has changed as I plan to open my practice in public health dentistry with a focus on children." |

Greetings ~
During the month of October, we have made the rounds to Circle meetings to update all members on the status of the grant for the Clinic to become a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). The final grant will be submitted to the federal government on November 17. Many thanks to all who submitted letters of support for this important initiative and to those that spent hours in helping determining a future site for the Clinic. Special thanks to members of the building committee, Carolyn DelConte, Chair; Chatka Ruggiero, Nancy Wohlford, John Secker, and Diane Menza. And also to real estate broker, David King, who spent many hours showing the committee various real estate sites. The support of the membership has been incredible and gives our proposal a strong edge in the eyes of the reviewers.
In August of 2011, the Clinic will be notified if it will receive federal funding. The competition for these federal funds is stiff - the Clinic has a 50 percent chance this round of receiving funding. We will keep the membership abreast of any news or updates we receive over the next several months. If the Clinic is funded, the new name of the Clinic will be The Child and Family Health Center, sponsored by the Oak Park and River Forest Infant Welfare Society. To the entire membership, thank you for your dedication and support of this important effort. Happy Thanksgiving!

LIZ & CHRISTINE NEWELL / CARRIAGE FLOWERS
WONDERFUL PHILANTHROPIC PARTNER!
| |
It's a busy fall day at Carriage Flowers, but, owner Liz Newell, has taken some time to meet with The Children's Clinic staff- Elizabeth Lippitt, Executive Director and Susanna Decker, Director of Development. We learned some wonderful things about Liz and Carriage Flowers and wanted to share some of the highlights of our meeting with you.
Over the past five years since Liz purchased Carriage Flowers, she has concentrated on growing the business. Liz, a former advertising executive for more than 25 years in Chicago, went to work on her new floral venture by renovating the space and recreating the Carriage Flowers brand. In its first year, sales were up by 23 percent. Liz has acquired three other floral businesses over the last few years and folded their operations under the Carriage Flowers umbrella. Despite the economy, things are continuing to go well.
Liz and her daughter, Christine, manage the operations of the Shop together...a real mother/daughter dynamic duo! "After many years in the advertising business, I needed a change, but, also, wanted to find a new path that involved my daughter and I working together," noted Liz.
Liz has been a generous donor to The Children's Clinic for many years and also lends her support to both the Holiday Housewalk & Market and the Day at the Races event. This year, Carriage Flowers will also be a vendor at the Holiday Housewalk & Market. Thank you Liz, Christine and Carriage Flowers for all you to for The Children's Clinic! You are a wonderful community partner to the Clinic.

ROLLING ON THE RIVER - ROLLS ALL ACES
Saturday September 25th was a beautiful night in Chicago, especially if you were one of the guests at an amazing downtown loft on the river! Over 100 guests rolled the dice, enjoyed fine wines, nibbled from a tasty buffet and had tons of fun at The Rolling on the River Party! Special heartfelt thank to the women of Circle One for their hard work, fine attention to detail and determination to have a successful fundraiser. Their commitment paid off as this stellar event raised more then $12,000 for The Children's Clinic!

BIG NEWS!! NEW HEALTH EDUCATION OUTREACH COORDINATOR & NEW VAN FOR THE CLINIC!
This past August, Alma Rojas was hired as the Clinic's first Health Education Outreach Coordinator. Prior to coming to the Clinic, Alma worked in the public health arena at the University of Illinois Extension in Chicago, where she provided health education workshops to both children and adults across Cook County. Alma is bilingual in Spanish and English. She is one of five children and was raised in Cicero, thus, she is very familiar with the Clinic's service area. For the first several months in her new role, Alma has focused on representing the Clinic at area health fairs and has been working with local preschools and day care centers on issues surrounding nutrition. "One of the most exciting things about my job is to see the excitement among the children when they learn new things," noted Alma. Alma will also coordinate the Clinic's Portable Dentistry Program - which reached more than 1,250 students across 18 schools in Oak Park, Berwyn and Cicero last year. Thanks to an exceptional grant from the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation, the Portable Dentistry Program will have its own van to transport dental equipment and the dental staff to schools across the communities we serve. In the next month, look for the van around town sporting The Children's Clinic logo! |
