Pirates Invade Opera Omaha

Omaha, NE - October 1, 2008

Opera Omaha officials revealed today that the company has been plundered by the infamous Pirates of Penzance.  On Tuesday morning, employees arrived to find a note, allegedly from the Pirate King, taped to an office door.

The note, which carried the traditional 'skull and crossbones' associated with Pirates, listed several grievances from the Pirates and an apology for frank language.  "It was kind of scary," noted Kelly Blice, Opera Omaha's Director of Marketing, " At first, we thought it was a hoax.  We had no reason to think the Pirates were actually upset.  In fact, we thought they would be happy with all the recent attention."

At the center of the dispute appears to be displeasure among the Pirates about some of Opera Omaha's marketing and promotional activities, particularly events for International Talk Like a Pirate Day.  Opera Omaha sent a roving Pirate out to ask people to talk like a pirate and then released the video on the internet.  [Click Here to watch contested video] "It seems the Pirates have recently taken steps to protect their image or brand and felt that our recent marketing efforts, made without their prior approval, were objectionable to them,"  stated Blice.

"Most disturbing," according to John Wehrle, Opera Omaha General Director, "was reference in the note to the Pirates having taken something from the company.  In essence, it was a ransom note, although it didn't say what had been taken or note a price."  "It seems a real shame to me."  Wehrle continues, "Between the Talk Like a Pirate video promotion and a wonderful event for kids that our Guild created and hosted, Opera Omaha was just trying to have a little fun and promote the show."

Stay tune for update.
