Message From Principal, Sarah O'Leary

Creating a sense of community where all feel safe and respected is the responsibility of all of the members of the Proctor School.  Monthly, the entire school comes together, in an All School Assembly that celebrates student success and achievement and helps to create a positive school culture for our students to grow academically and socially.

Love of Learning
On Thursday, we had our first All School Assembly.  Our sixth grade students design and lead the assembly. During our assembly, our sixth grade students shared the characteristics of being a great student.

Mrs. Steinberg challenged us with a math problem and reminded us about how to get involved with Math Olympiad.

constitution day
Mrs. Kelleher's class shares the Preamble.

The students in Mrs. Kelleher's class helped us to celebrate Constitution Day, sharing facts about the creation of the Constitution and reciting the Preamble. Mrs.O'Leary challenged us to use the new assessment system to evaluate the

cleanliness of a bedroom. Ask your child if their room meets the standard for a neat and clean bedroom. Congratulations to all the students that shared during the assembly.  They were amazing!

From the Health Office

From the Proctor School Health Office:

State mandated screening for vision, height and weight will start in the next few weeks.

A Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a measure that is used to show a person's "weight for height for age."  It is calculated using an individual's height and weight.  Just like a blood pressure reading or an eye screening test, a BMI can be a useful tool in identifying possible health risks.

Massachusetts schools have taken heights and weights of students each year since the 1950's.  According to the state's new BMI screening regulation which passed in April 2009, schools must now collect the heights and weights of students in grades 1,4,7 and 10.  Each child's height and weight will then be used to calculate their BMI.  The results will be mailed home.

Like all screening tools, BMI can produce some false positives or negatives.  For example, a student may have an artificially high BMI due to a high level of lean body tissue or muscle, as may be found in a well-conditioned athlete. That's why it's so important to follow up with your doctor if your child's BMI is high or low.  All medical information is kept strictly confidential.

Parents and legal guardians may request, in writing, that their child not participate in the program.  If you have any questions, concerns please contact the school nurse.

Katie's Corner

Welcome to KATIE'S CORNER!

KATIE'S CORNER! is my new weekly column detailing tips, recipes, and interesting facts about packing a healthy lunchbox! My name is Katie Chiffer, and I'm currently a sophomore at Masco and am also a proud graduate of Steward and Proctor Schools. I've been a Topsfield Girl Scout since I was in kindergarten and am currently working on my Gold Award. From now until June, 2013, my goal with "Project Lunchbox: Let's Eat!" is to introduce families to the vast array of lunchbox options available to them and help students see the correlation between healthy eating and positive school performance.

In addition to this column, I'll be teaching a series of nutrition/cooking education classes this year. These monthly classes, which are open to all Proctor students and their parents/guardians, will be held in the CLIC Lab and each class will focus on a different type of food. The first class, BEVERAGES, will be held on Monday, October 15, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Click here for a permission slip.

Until Next Week...Plan well, Pack well, Live well!
