Keep Manure out of my Water!500 pigs produce 3,000 cubic feet of manure per month. That's over 256,000 gallons per year.
 |
On March 25, the Wall Street Journalpublished an article, "Manure Raises a New Stink," about the large bubbles of biogas forming within the manure lagoon of a farm in Eastern Indiana. These biogas bubbles, which are "big enough to be seen in satellite photos," are alarming neighbors - and are raising the level of manure in the lagoons to the point that the waste needs to be hauled to another farm to keep the lagoon from overflowing!
This article explains, in just a few short paragraphs, why the Hoosier Enviornmental Council is concerned with industrial livestock practices in Indiana. This is just one example of the environmental and health risks that industrial livestock agriculture can pose to Indiana residents. In 2008 alone, there were 40 manure spills reported by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). Such a number undercounts the total spills in our state because many go unreported. These spills flood our water bodies with nitrates, phosphorus, and pathogens - including E. coli, which now impairs 822 Indiana waterways.
