AN EPIC STORY OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND SELF-DISCOVERY

The History of Egyptology (Episode 1)
Photo:Sphinx
Egypt was already considered old by the ancient Greeks and Romans

Land of the Pharaohs. Birthplace of Christian monasticism. One of the earliest civilizations. Egypt has been called many things and captured western imagination for the past 2000 years. This fascination with the land of the Nile continues today. Tours from around the world flock to Egypt to explore its antiquities. And iconic images, such as Tutankhamun's burial mask, can be found everywhere from China to America.

This first episode in the series, The History of Egyptology, explores ancient Egypt's contact with the wider, ancient world, through trade and cultural exchange with the city-states of Greece and the Roman Empire.

When long time ARCE member Dr. W. Benson Harer, Jr. entered The London International Antiquarian Book Fair at Olympia, Washington, in 2005, and made his way around the stalls, he had no idea of the treasure he would find. Reading through the list of available titles from a bookseller named Sims Reed Ltd., one item in particular caught his attention - a manuscript allegedly written by one Frédéric Cailliaud, and containing volumes of text, masses of notes, and a dizzying assortment of drawn, published, and painted imagery. Dr. Harer bought it immediately.

Picture an austere desertscape of dry valleys and mountains. Nestled against this backdrop stands a monastery complex surrounded by high adobe walls with churches and chapels, a bakery, a spring, and a lush garden where olive and date trees are cultivated by monks under the unrelenting sun of Egypt's Eastern Desert.
