BAY AREA HOSTS 2010 ANNUAL MEETING
|

Presentations, Awards, Tributes Make Meeting Memorable
ARCE's 61st Annual Meeting took place in Oakland, California, April
23-25, 2010. Over 300 ARCE members attended this year's Meeting, which
was co-hosted by the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology; the
Department
of Near Eastern Studies, University of California, Berkeley; and the
American Research Center in Egypt/Northern California Chapter. One presentation that garnered considerable attention
from attendees and media alike was "Baboons, Stable Isotopes, and the
Location of Punt," by Gillian Leigh Moritz, Nathaniel Dominy and Salima
Ikram. The team analyzed baboon mummies from the British Museum to
reveal the long-disputed location of "Punt," a land of exotic riches
often referred to by the ancient Egyptians. Their findings were reported
in the UK's Independent newspaper. Read the story>>See all of the highlights from this year's Meeting>> |
ARCE CAMPAIGN TO PRESERVE EGYPTIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE
|
|
Why I Contributed
"I contributed to ARCE's Endowment Campaign because
I think that monument conservation and training are two of the most
important priorities ARCE has. These monuments are crumbling away right
now. Government funding is unreliable and we need our own money to
continue this work." -Betty Bussey, Northern California Chapter ARCE's programs of monitoring ground
water levels around Karnak and Luxor temple coupled with essential
conservation projects are ensuring the preservation of these critical
sites
that educate us about the aspirations, ambitions, culture, and beliefs
of the ancient Egyptians. Read more>>For every dollar ARCE raises, the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher
Foundation will double it! Follow our progress to our goal. Consider a pledge that you can
contribute comfortably over five years. If you can give $1000 which can be paid as $50 per quarter for five years, we'll send you our new photo-rich, coffee table
book, Preserving Egypt's Cultural Heritage, as a thank you gift. |

ARCE Intern Pursues Her Passion for Egypt
"I've always been interested in ancient Egyptian history and culture.
I
find it fascinating to reconstruct a picture of Egyptian daily life
by looking at the tools and artifacts these people once used. After interning at ARCE, I decided to study abroad in Egypt for one
semester... Read more about Shelby's journey>> |
