BRIGHT BEGINNINGS
Bright Beginnings 12Another successful year for the YMCA's Bright Beginnings program

65 Lancaster County children will start this school year with a Bright Beginning thanks to generous donors that made this rewarding project possible.  Thank you to the 52 wonderful volunteers, including 14 employees of RWC, who helped pick out clothes and boost self-confidence.  Children were treated to one-on-one clothes shopping time in a group setting over 2 days at the Kilmarnock Wal-Mart. Backpacks with school supplies were given to each child as well.

Pictured are several of the RWC employees, Y staff and children they shopped with for school clothes.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE

The sessions are FREE and open to the public.  Monday Oct 15 at 5pm or Friday Oct 26 at 10am.  No registration is required.  Exercise attire is optional.

FROM FLOATIES TO FREESTYLE

Drowning Prevention Through Education

  • Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children in the state of Virginia.
  • Children ages 5-14 most often drown in swimming pools and open water.

On October 8th, the Northern Neck Family YMCA is beginning another season of our Second Grade Learn to Swim Program. The daily swim lessons are provided for every 2nd grade child in the Lancaster County Public School System. This is the 6th year the Northern Neck Family YMCA has provided these lessons and this year over 80 students are participating in the program!

The second graders learn basic swimming skills as well as safety skills such as boating, CPR and rescue breathing.  These lessons are provided FREE of charge, by the Northern Neck Family YMCA.

SAVE THE DATE! 15th ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF THE TREES

FOT 2011Join us for the 15th Annual Festival of the Trees.  This community event that kicks off the holiday season for Lancaster County is November 30 - December 2.

Our committee is hard at work soliciting local businesses and individuals to donate beautiful entries for our silent auction, and they need your help. If you are looking for a fun, quality time project with your children or church group, then pick a theme and decorate a Christmas wreath or tree for our event. All proceeds from this community weekend extravaganza benefit your neighbors, friends and colleagues, through our Guardian program.

Please contact Donna McGrath at 804.435.0223 or donna.mcgrath@peninsulaymca.org to be a part of this year's theme "Sharing the Spirit of Faith & Giving."

5210 - LIVE HEALTHY EVERY DAY

5210At the Y, we're committed to children's healthy development and well-being. We want to make it easier for busy families to eat well and get plenty of physical activity, so it is with great excitement that we introduce our 5210 program.

5210 is a new program the Y is implementing this fall in all of our School-Age Child Care and Preschool Child Development programs. It is a program that helps children to: learn about healthy eating and exercise, redirect excessive "screen time" (TV, computer use, video games, etc.) and select healthier drinks.

5210 will educate children already participating in our programs about making healthy choices, and it will provide take-home educational materials so families can support healthy choices as well. The 5210 program is based on the most recent science and research available; we've added "the Y way" to make it fun and interactive for children.

5210 is built on four main pillars that help children live healthy everyday:

- 5      Five servings of fruits and vegetables each day

- 2      Two hours or less of screen time daily

- 1      One hour or more of physical activity each day

- 0      Zero sugary drinks

The 5210 program incorporates lessons and activities about healthy eating with physical activity. Together, they encourage healthy behaviors through active play, literacy and math-skill development, creative learning, and hands-on snack time activities. The program will be implemented in many other Y programs in 2013, such as: swim lessons, youth super sports, child watch, first tee, summer camp and others.
