| HELP SEND A KID TO CAMP | | |
A rag-tag bunch of bums took over the lobby of the YMCA in Kilmarnock this past weekend, protesting loose change in pockets everywhere in Lancaster County. Ben Estes, spokesman for the group, known simply to his friends as "the bum", said, "This occupation was staged to bring awareness to all the pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters people have just laying around their homes. If everyone took home a piggy jar from the Y and filled it with the coins in their sofa cushions, cars, etc. we could send 100's of kids to camp this summer".
According to Co-Director of Development Donna McGrath 108 children attended the Y's summer day camp program in 2011, with 47% of these families receiving assistance from the Guardian program. The Guardian program in turn received assistance for the third year in a row from Mr. Estes "Hey Buddy Can You Spare a Dime" event, enabling over 200 youth to attend camp who would otherwise not have had the opportunity. Parents and guardians were able to work through the summer, knowing their children were in a safe, structured environment where they could swim, participate in crafts, and go on field trips while learning and engaging in the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
The bums would like you to pick up a jar, fill it with your everyday leftover change and join them for a coin counting ceremony at the Bank of Lancaster's main branch 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday May 19th. There will be vagrant cookies and hobo drinks at the bank collection site. You may also fill the jar earlier and drop it off at the Northern Neck Family YMCA at anytime, feeling free to take another empty jar to fill. If you would like to join the bums please contact Donna at 435-0223 or donna.mcgrath@peninsulaymca.org.
