POLAR PLUNGE

YMCA Camp Kekoka staff is starting off the New Year with a SPLASH?  This unlikely event has brave camp staff members plunging into the frigid waters of Indian Creek to raise money for the Guardian Program, a scholarship fund which allows us to make sure every child has the opportunity to attend Camp Kekoka and have the experience that only a resident camp can provide.  The plunge will take place on Thursday January 5 at 12pm. Sponsors are invited to warm up afterward with hot soup, hot chocolate, and other assorted goodies.

Some of our local plungers are Cassie Leichty, Jonathan Frith, & Sydney Shivers.  To sponsor the plungers go to
this link or, for more information, please ask the welcome desk, or call Cassie Leichty at 435-3616.
14th ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF THE TREES
FOT 2011
Once again the Y rang in the holiday season with the Lighting of the Trees party, where close to 100 people mingled, enjoyed fine cuisine from local restaurants, and had the opportunity to bid on exclusive Friday night only silent auction items. Several area musicians added to the ambiance of the evening with their beautiful instrumentals.

The community was fortunate to experience the talents of the Bell Ringers as well as Reign Saturday morning. Cookies and milk with Santa, a bounce house and obstacle course were enjoyed by many children that afternoon.

Sunday saw a wonderful performance by members of Lancaster High's Jazz Band and final bidding of the silent auction. Best in show was awarded to the Rappahannock Garden Club for the second year in a row.

Thanks to so many businesses and individuals in our caring community, over $17,780 will be added to the Guardian program; so that many in our county will benefit from all the Y has to offer.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

Registration is underway now for Youth Super Sports Basketball at the YMCA.  Youth will be grouped in separate divisions by ages: 4-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14.  There will be opportunities for girls ages 11-14 to play some separate (non-league) games.  The cost is $55 for members and $70 for all others who want to participate.  Practices will start for most teams the week of January 9th, and the season concludes on March 3rd.  Games are primarily held on Saturdays in the Y gymnasium.  All divisions, ages 6 and older, will include some travel games.  Practices will be scheduled following registration on the following days, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and some Fridays.

Youth Super Sports Basketball emphasizes the basic skills of basketball, teaches the rules of the game, and of course, focuses on our core character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.  Team sizes are designed so everyone receives lots of playing time.  Volunteer coaches are needed for the season to be a success.  Reversible jerseys and shorts will be provided to each participant.
