| PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT | | |
On November 12, the Northern Neck Family YMCA hosted their Second Annual Pickleball Tournament. There were over 44 members and participants registered from the Northern Neck YMCA, Chesterfield, Gloucester, Hanover, Mechanicsville, Midlothian, Powhatan, Richmond, Tappahannock, and even California. Over 100 people were in attendance to watch this day long affair. Players ranged in age from 23 to 78 years young.
This special event was planned by over 12 YMCA volunteers, with all proceeds benefitting the Guardian program. They were able to raise $1200, which insures no one is turned away for the inability to pay.

| SECOND GRADE SWIM LESSONS | |
On November 18th, the Northern Neck Family YMCA wrapped up another season of 2nd grade swim lessons. The daily swim lessons, are provided for each 2nd grade child in the Lancaster County Public School System, and are made possible by a grant from the Jessie Ball DuPont Foundation. This is the 5th year that the Y has provided these lessons and this year over 80 students participated in the program!
The kids learned basic swimming skills as well as safety skills such as boating, CPR and rescue breathing. This year we had 4 instructors and 1 volunteer who are all Water Safety Instructor certified through the American Red Cross. The instructors are Jim Evans, Jean Poole, Donna Funkhouser and Lisa Shivers. Karen Jackson, a member of the YMCA Masters Swim Team, volunteered her time each day to assist with the lessons.
The Y is led and run by volunteers. To find out how you can make a difference, contact Donna McGrath at donna.mcgrath@peninsulaymca.org or 435-0223. |
