| VIOLET TURNS 90 | |
Veteran YMCA Group Exercise instructor, Violet Lewis, celebrated her 90th birthday on October 21. An inspiration to young and old, Violet has been teaching aerobics since 1981 when she was 60. Weighing slightly more than her age, the 95-lb fireball has barely slowed down despite having had heart surgery two years ago. She currently teaches three to four fitness classes per week, including Water Aerobics, Body Design and the very popular Senior Specialty class.
"She's a terrific teacher," said 90-year-old Ruth Rice, a Senior Specialty class participant. "She's interested in all of her students, assisting some to their chairs and setting up their equipment when needed. When I had my knee replacement a few years ago, I was no longer able to run or jump, so Violet took me into the weight room and showed me the elliptical machine, saying it was good for my heart. I've been using it ever since for 15 minutes before each class."
YMCA Group Exercise Instructor Coordinator, Linda Hamilton, has been teaching with Violet since their days together at Oakwood Fitness Center (now the YMCA Wiley Child Development Center). "She is one of the most inspirational people I've ever met," said Hamilton.
"Can you imagine having all that energy?" said Rice. "When I asked her one day where she got it, she said she'd always had it. I thought, 'Imagine what she was like when she was three! Her poor mother!'"
Lucille Tutt, another 90-year-old Senior Specialty class participant who's been with Violet since her Oakwood days, said, "Everyone in class loves her. She's a wonderful instructor who challenges her students, going out of her way to help everybody."
In a Rappahannock Record article from February 26, 2009, Violet said that she hoped she'd still be teaching when she was 90. At this rate, 95 is looking pretty promising. |

| DON'T LET THE FLU...GET TO YOU! | | |
CVS is administering flu shots to those interested on Monday November 14th at the Northern Neck Family YMCA from 12-2pm. The flu inoculations are available to anyone 18 years of age and older for a small charge. CVS staff bill and submit information to qualified insurance providers for those who bring their insurance information with them on that day. Most insurance programs and Medicare part B cover the entire cost of the inoculation.
Pre-registration can be done at the Northern Neck Family YMCA anytime before the clinic. Pre-registration is not mandatory but definitely suggested so that supplies will fit demand.
