YMCA MASTERS SMIMMERS  COMPETE NATIONALLY
masters

Eleven members representing the Northern Neck Family YMCA adult swim team, the Stripers, traveled to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the YMCA National Masters Championship Swim Meet April 14-17. The competition included 504 athletes ages 19 - 92 years.

The team, one of 43 participating, finished with a combined overall ranking of 15th, and a total team score of 294 points.

Individual and relay points are added to tabulate team scores. Swimmers compete within their own 5-year age groups or 10-year groups for relays. Medals and points are awarded for those placing first through eighth. Breakdown of individual awards follows: one 1st place, eight 2nd places, thirteen 3rd places, six 4th places, eleven 5th places, six 6th places, four 7th places, and five 8th places. The women ranked 11th and the men were 20th. There were 20 personal record swims from the group.

Virginia state record times were swum by Scott Kauffman for the 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly and 100-yard free. Kauffman won a gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle.

Carolyn Alsup, Kathy Broderick, Betsy Chambers, Donna Funkhouser, Ray Funkhouser, Esther Glover, Mary Helne, Kathy Kauffman, Scott Kauffman, Andrea Latell, and team coach Kathryn Gregory comprised the Northern Neck Family YMCA group.

CRUZIN ON THE BREEZE

Come aboard the Chesapeake Breeze!  Join us Sunday, June 5 for a sunset wine cruise to benefit the Bright Beginnings program.   Wine and dine at a sumptuous buffet of heavy hors d'oeuvres prepared by Cora and her cohort, Bruce Watson of Jacey Winery, then dance away the evening as the sun sets!  Tickets are $50 per person and all proceeds benefit Bright Beginnings.  The cruise departs from Buzzard's Point Marina in Reedville at 6:30pm sharp and returns at 9:00pm.

Bright Beginnings is a program that gives children ages 5-12 living below the poverty line a shopping spree for clothes, coats and shoes they otherwise wouldn't have.  Local volunteers board Y and school buses to take the kids shopping one-on-one at Walmart.  In addition to the clothing, each child receives a backpack of school supplies.  The goal is to help children get off to a good start by giving them the confidence and the tools they need to learn when they walk into their classrooms.

If you would like to receive an invitation, become a sponsor, or for more information, please email Lisa Shivers at lisa.shivers@peninsulaymca.org.
