Give to those in need
United Way of Northern Arizona is deeply concerned about the families impacted by the devastating fires in Northeast Arizona. Many evacuees will incur expenses that will create economic hardship and that in the aftermath of the fire many families will need help restoring their lives. For these reasons, UWNA has established the Wallow Fire Fund to provide assistance to people impacted by the fire.

UWNA News Updates
Day of Action

June 21, 2011

The Day of Action is one day that United Ways across the world come together to LIVE UNITED. It allows people to give back to their communities and make big changes locally.

United Way of Northern Arizona's Day of Action was dedicated to childhood literacy. Getting books to children is a proven strategy for improving educational outcomes. As a child grows, reading becomes increasingly important for success. This year, United Way launched an ambitious goal to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors, and mentors.

For those who did not have the time to volunteer, United Way of Northern Arizona launched a Virtual Book Drive in partnership with First Book, which will end July 5, 2011. Contributions to the book drive will help provide a book to a child in your local community.

City of Flagstaff and Coconino County Help Residence Prepare

The City of Flagstaff employees are doing their part to ensure the protection of the community members affected by last year's Schultz Flood. On June 2, 2011, workers, including City Manager Kevin Burke, Deputy City Manager Jim Wine, and Chief of Police Brent Cooper, volunteered their time to fill and place sandbags around a home which was greatly impacted by the floods.

On June 25, 2011, UWNA, Coconino County, and the Civic Service Institute partnered bringing together over 120 volunteers to build sandbag barriers and reinforce existing barriers for residents affected by the floods. Volunteers placed over 3,800 sandbags at 11 homes in the community. The partners look to complete more flood preparation work on July 9, 2011. For more information or to volunteer, visit our VOLUNTEER website.

Flood Preparedness Guides
Schultz Fire/Flood Area
County Logo In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, Coconino County published a Flood Preparedness Guide and Webpage for those affected by the Schultz Flood last year. The guide reflects on the lessons learned last year that can be applied this year to reduce the impact of flooding. The County believes to successfully prepare for summer flooding requires a partnership between the County and the residents. The County is focusing their efforts on assisting you by providing some key services and information to support your work to protect your homes, such as purchasing or renewing your flood insurance.

Wallow Fire/Flood Area

apachecountysealBecause of the recent devastation and clearing of forest lands

due to the Wallow Fire, the risk of flooding in Apache County

during the monsoon season is high. Apache County officials

worked to publish a flood preparedness guide to inform

residents of ways to prevent further financial and emotional

troubles. The information included in the Apache County Flood

Preparedness Guide comes from Coconino County. Coconino

County was able to partner and share information on how they

pushed through to assist the communities, and how they will

continue their efforts even years after the Schultz Fire.

If you would like more information on how you can prepare flooding in your area, please visit the Flood Preparedness webpages.
