United Way of Way of Northern Arizona kicked off the 2009 Campaign on September 23 at Little America. Under the leadership of Brady Brogni, 2009 Pacesetter Chair, eight local companies advance the common good by setting the pace for the annual campaign: APS, Northern Arizona Intergovernmental Public Transportation Authority, NAU - President's Council, Nestle Purina, SCA Tissue in Flagstaff and Bellemont, UniSource, UPS and Wells Fargo. EDUCATION UPDATE |

|

|
KINDERCAMP 2009
This summer, more than 180 Flagstaff children attended KinderCamp where they prepared for the big transition into school. KinderCamp provides children with opportunities to develop motor and literacy skills, but most importantly teachers and parents have noticed incredible leaps with social-emotional skills needed for children to succeed in an academic environment. KinderCamp was conducted at the following elementary schools: Puente de Hozho, Kinsey, Christensen and South Beaver.
UWNA focuses on improving education to help children and youth achieve their potential. Increasing school readiness skills is a particular focus for UWNA's EDUCATION initiative because readiness skills indicate that children are on track in areas of literacy, social/emotional, and cognitive development. Without these skills, young children are entering school already at a disadvantage. By increasing the percentage of children entering kindergarten with high levels of school readiness skills, KinderCamp gives children a better opportunity to succeed in the years to come.
The success of 2009 KinderCamp is best told by the parent, here is just one family's experience:
"For my son it was more of an issue of academic readiness. He didn't know his letters and we had been working with him at home and in pre-school, but with the learning structure of KinderCamp, it was only one month and he learned to recognize every single letter.
I feel much better as a parent, knowing that my son is going into kindergarten knowing his letters. I didn't want him to feel overwhelmed right away and end up getting discouraged. Knowing his letters before starting kindergarten helped take the pressure off and he feels comfortable being in school. Something that is so important for me is that my kids enjoy learning.
My kids loved KinderCamp. There wasn't a day that they didn't want to go, and the teachers were phenomenal. I think that is the biggest success - that the KinderCamp teachers really helped my kids get excited for school and establish that joy of learning. It was like night and day, seeing the improvements during KinderCamp, for my son academically and for my daughter socially. My children are really ready for the structure and responsibility of kindergarten and they enjoy it."
