So wonderful: Chicory 'verdi' seedlings! |
I just
wanted to send out a quick reminder about our Big Annual Plant Sale this weekend!
We have tons of fabulous varieties of heirloom tomatoes and
peppers, hot and sweet,
and many other great things for your summer vegetable and herb gardens.
We also have hard to find and really cool herbs and perennials
too - for those of you with more eccentric tastes! Red-Stem Dandelion Chicory |
I wanted to
mention our Chicories - we specialize in Heirloom Chicory Varieties -
Chicories come in all sorts of traditional varieties each
with a different look, feel, taste, etc. When you buy a bunch of
dandelion greens in the store, you are actually buying a type of
dandelion-shaped chicory. Radicchios, escaroles and endives all fall
into this same group of fabulous plants. We have seedlings available for
the red rib, the
white rib, and a whole bunch of soft, lettuce-like, radicchio-flavored
chicories. They have great cleansing properties and high levels of
minerals and other phyto nutrients. Blushed Radicchio Chicory - too cute! |
We still have plenty of wonderful, healthy heirloom tomato varieties - I grew extra of all my favorites and past customer favorites such as Aunt Ginny's Purple, Black Krim, and Aunt Ruby's German Green. We also have over ten different varieties of basil to match your tomatoes. Always tell me all about your favorite tomato varieties of gardens-past; I will source out seeds and grow them for the upcoming year!
And don't forget the cherry tomatoes - we have Sweet 100's, a constant favorite, as well as Yellow, Red, and Purple Pears! I'm already imagining the bowl of multicolored pear tomatoes on the summer breakfast table!
And we still have tons of strawberries, and now is the time to get them in the ground for delicious berries! We're reducing the price to get them sold and planted as soon as possible - the strawberry plants in the 4" square pots will now be reduced to 3 for $10.
We also still have plenty of two of my favorite perennials - Veronica 'Icicles,' see photo on the right, and Verbascum 'Copper Rose,' for which pictures just don't do it justice!
And my favorite "eccentric" herb of the year is Elecampane. I had a generous germination this year, and I can offer a bunch of robust seedlings ready to go into traditional medicinal herb gardens. This is one herb that shows how serious you are about herbs when people see it in your garden. It is a huge plant, a perennial, with wide leaves and yellow flowers. Elecampane is a stately plant that needs room. The part used most medicinally is the root, used as a tea for coughs and any bronchial issue. This is what we make our Miraculous Chicken Tea with to prevent colds and coughs in our birds. I also brew myself a strong cup of Elecampane Tea whenever I have a cough or cold. It has an odd flavor - but you get used it and really enjoy it. Another great new tea plant we have this year is Greek Mountain Tea - this is a very old tea plant, from the Mediterrean region, brewed by shepherds for centuries. Fortifying and great for strengthening and energizing. And there is so much more; I can just go and go about all the great plants! You can download our 2010 Plant and Seedling Listing of the Herbs,
Heirloom Variety Vegetables, Cut Flowers, and Perennial Plants on our website: www.midsummerfarm.comIf you haven't been to our farm yet, we're located at 156 East Ridge Road, Warwick, Ny 10990. And welcome! |
