Happy Autumn!
And it already feels like Fall! Brisk and Sparkling and Magical like all Falls are in this area!
A reminder: There is still room in our two workshops this weekend:
Making Your Own Herbal Salves, Ointments, and Lip Balms. I really love doing this workshop - it is such a rare and exciting skill to have - and you'll be making much higher quality products in your own kitchen that you can buy in stores for a tremendous amount more money! And they work magnificently! You'll be thrilled with how great your own lip balm works this winter! Class is Saturday, October 3rd from 10-12 noon and costs $36. Email or call us to save yourself a spot!
The other class this Saturday is Making Natural Candles. We will be using mostly beeswax, the essence of burning beeswax creates an atmosphere of calm, collected mindfulness - perfect for winter indoor days. We'll make poured candles, rolled candles, and dipped taper candles. And people really appreciate receiving homemade candles for holiday gifts. Class is Saturday, October 3rd from 12:30 - 2:30 pm and costs $36. Email or call us to save yourself a spot!
An Announcement: I am about to launch a new website focusing on Enhancing Natural Energy! I'll be sending out an email with details next week! I am filling it full of intense information so it will take some time to build, but I am starting it with a page addressing Cellulite and Dark Veins, because that topic was inspired by my newest salve that we will be making at the Herbal Salve Workshop this weekend. We will also have an on-line store where you can purchase our salves and lip balms as well as e-books. I can't wait to launch it!
Don't forget that I have also started a website to archive the articles from these newsletters in one place - you can access it here. And you can also still find additional links and materials on the Midsummer Farm website's Newsletter Extras and Links page.

_____________________________________________________________________ Another Step in Empowering Your Eating:
Choosing alkalizing foods
Most of us have created rather acidic environments in our bodies.
Sugar, meat, white carbs all contribute to creating acidic imbalance.
An acidic pH is a cornerstone of ill-health. Acid environments nurture
bacteria and cancer. Keep the following simple choices and food
additions in the back of your head and start implementing them whenever
you can to rebalance your body's pH and start establishing an alkaline
environment.
The basics
A pH of 7 is neutral. A healthy body ideally has a pH of around 7.5 or
8.5 - basically, slightly alkaline. A good pH is dependent upon having
adequate minerals. Everyone seems to be aware that calcium is important
for our bones or for preventing osteoporosis, but calcium is just one
of a whole gamut of important minerals your body needs. Thus, it is
also Important to watch pH for bone health. Your body wants to be
alkaline so badly that the bones will sacrifice themselves to restore
alkalinity. If you have an acidic pH for too long, your bones will be
adversely affected. Also note, you want a balance of minerals - don't
be fooled into just taking a whole lot of calcium, without also taking
a balance of other minerals, such as magnesium, zinc, trace minerals,
etc. That is why I like to get minerals through whole foods, which
contain a balance of various minerals. Dark Leafy Greens are my
favorite and one of the most effective ways to get minerals.
Things that cause Acidity (low pH) in the body:
Animal proteins (sulfuric acid)
Sugar and white carbs and grains
Milk, dairy products
Salt (white table salt - good quality sea salt like Himalayan Sea Salt actually provide minerals and are alkalizing)
Processed Foods
Stress
Toxins
Coffee
Lack of minerals
The main problem with an overly acidic body is that and acidic
environment strips minerals. Our diet is already seriously lacking in
quality minerals and micro-minerals, due to synthetic fertilizers and
factory farming practices, so to then further destroy mineral balances
by eating a diet that creates acidity is a perfect storm for diabetes,
osteoporosis, weak joints and muscles, heart disease, kidney disease
and a whole pile of other health issues, that will be exasperated by if
not cause by chronic acidosis. An alkaline environment is also very
important element in healthy gut bacteria. Long-term health and
longevity have everything to do with acid-alkaline balance. Beyond
this, bacteria and cancers feed off acidity and sugar. Especially if
you have a cold or infection, be sure to focus on foods that lower
acidity and raise alkalinity.
Luckily, there is a huge variety of wonderful delicious foods that will restore and balance alkalinity:
yams
black pepper
onions and garlic
asparagus
kale and dark leafy greens
mustard greens
parsley
peppers
sprouts
arugula, endive, and other bitter greens
broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables
limes and lemons
nectarines
raspberries
watermelon
citrus fruits - tangerines, grapefruit
pineapple
cantaloupe
spices - cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, etc.
high quality sea salt
apple cider vinegar
radishes
avocados
nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds) _____________________________________________________________________
Vegetables and Fruits again? Unsurprisingly, better health is once
again connected with more vegetables and fruits. We can pretty much say
that the quality of health you experience is based on the number of
vegetables and fruits in your diet. _____________________________________________________________________
So what can you start doing right now? ~Squeeze half a lemon or lime into your water bottle. ~Reduce the serving sizes of meats and other acidic foods and increase the amount of dark leafy greens and other vegetables. ~Be sure to cook with onions and garlic. They are basically a great start to every sauteed meal! ~A big salad made with dark leafy greens and bitter greens everyday would be fabulous. ~Use apple cider vinegar in your dressing ~Start using more freshly ground black pepper! ~Add a handful of fresh chopped parsley on top of almost any meal you take off the stove right before serving. ~Add a handful of fresh chopped parsley and / or mustard greens to tuna and salmon salad ~Start sprouting your own bean sprouts and adding them to salads ~Switch from coffee to herbal tea or spicy tea like ginger tea ~Avoid sugar water drinks - soda, juice, etc. ~Eat avocados and nuts. ~And don't forget to drink plenty of water!

Simple Healing Greens Salve Recipe
~Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil infused with equal amounts of: Dried Comfrey Leaf Dried Self Heal Flowers and Leaf Dried Plantain Leaf Dried Yarrow Blossoms Dried Goldenseal Root ~High Quality 100% Pure Beeswax ~Vitamin E oil - 1/4 tsp ~A few drops each of Essential Oils Eucalyptus, Patchouli, Lavender
General Steps: 1. Put herbs in double boiler. Pour oil to cover. Put water in bottom part and heat lightly on low heat. 2. Keep warm, but never let it boil. Infuse for 4 to 5 hours. 3. Strain through coffee filters into a pyrex glass. 5. Add small amounts of beeswax, place pyrex in preheated oven until beeswax is just melted - stir occasionally. 6.
Once beeswax is melted, take out of oven, let cool a bit so you don't
cook your essential oils, and add vitamin E and essential oils 7.
Test for consistency by dipping a spoon into the liquid and freezing
for a couple minutes, and add more beeswax if necessary 8. Pour carefully into containers.
NOTE:
once you add the beeswax, clean up become very difficult - don't pour
through a strainer! Scrape up with paper towels - don't pour down drain!
Run water in sink until it is very hot or boil water in teapot and use
for cleaning the pots and utensils. Use as few utensils as possible.
To purchase herbs, I highly recommend Mountain Rose Herbs - you can find a link here! They have high quality, fresh organic dried bulk herbs. Although I try to grow as many herbs as possible myself, there are some that won't grow in this climate, or that I just can't grow enough quantity of - so I turn to Mountain Rose for those herbs!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH Super pH Balancing Salad Recipe
Mix the following ingredients in amounts 'to taste' in a big bowl:
Artichoke Hearts Asparagus Spears (can be cooked or raw) Chopped Bitter Greens like Dandelion Chopped Dark Greens like Kale Chopped Parsley Shredded Red Cabbage Thin Slices of Red Onion Chopped bell peppers Chopped radishes
Sprinkle with a simple vinaigrette made from apple cider vinegar (I like Eden Organic Apple Cider Vinegar or Bragg's), extra virgin olive oil, lots of fresh ground black pepper, garlic granules (my favorite is from Mountain Rose Herbs - the granules don't get all clumped up like a powder and the flavor is awesome), some lemon juice, a dash of sea salt, dash of red pepper flakes or paprika, and a dash of raw honey. Just mixing the ingredients together and tossing with the salad works fine, but I also like a creamier dressing sometimes. You can add a dash of lecithin powder (make sure you use a guaranteed non-GMO brand) and then whip up with an egg beater for a creamy homogenized-style dressing.
Top with avocado slices or nuts! _______________________________________________________________________ |
