Meet our Fourth Year
Audiology Students...
 4th years
Zac La Fratta

Zac La Fratta is a fourth-year extern at the Audiology Clinic at University Colorado Hospital. He is completing his clinical doctorate studies at Gallaudet University's audiology program under the Pediatric Audiology Education and Dissemination of Services (PAEDS) Grant for the U.S. Office of Special Education. He has completed clinical audiology rotations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area at an ENT private practice, Children's National Medical Center, and The River School. Zac currently serves as an Audiology LEND Fellow with the JFK Partners program here in Colorado to continue his training with pediatric audiology through various interdisciplinary models. He is also proud to work with several programs at the Marion Downs Hearing Center, including Campus Connections, Newborn Hearing Screenings, and Teen Day.

Zac has a bilateral, mild steeply sloping to profound sensorineural hearing loss acquired from exposure to bacterial meningitis at 8 months of age. His first spoken words (according to Dad) were "hold me," but sign language was his actual first language. He received early intervention services through The Callier Center at UT Dallas and was mainstreamed in both private and public schools. Zac wore hearing aids for the first decade of his life before putting them in the drawer for nearly twenty years. He now proudly wears hearing aids after embracing his hearing loss, and is currently in conversations of possibly pursuing a cochlear implant. Zac enjoys playing tennis, dining out, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Nicole Cyr

Originally from Maine, Nicole attended the University of Maine at Orono for a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Graduate School at the University of Colorado brought Nicole to Colorado, and eventually to the Marion Downs Hearing Center. In her fourth year externship, Nicole is currently working on her Clinical Doctorate degree in Audiology from the University of Colorado Boulder. Working at the University of Colorado Hospital has been a very eye opening experience for Nicole. She has discovered her fascination with cochlear implants, and her particular desire to work in pediatrics. When asked about her experience, Nicole said, "I am fortunate to have a clinical experience where I am exposed to the extensive possibilities of my future career."

When not studying, or working in the clinic, Nicole enjoys spending time with her dog, Stella, and her boyfriend. On the weekends, Nicole tries to find time to enjoy the beautiful outdoors by hiking, biking, or running. She makes sure to always attach a trailer to her bike so that Stella can enjoy the scenery as well.

Reading Race for Literacy 2012

Support the Marion Downs Hearing Center's Second Annual Reading Race for Literacy

You still have one month left to start the Reading Race... IT'S NOT TOO LATE! How many books can you read for September?

June 1, 2012-October 1, 2012

Materials and Reading Logs are due Novemeber 1, 2012

Literacy is the cornerstone to education. Help us advocate for literacy in children and adults by joining us on this summer reading race. Reading Race for Literacy was created to raise awareness about literacy challenges among children with hearing loss as well as to fundraise to support the Marion Downs Hearing Center programs and services.

Reading Race for Literacy is open to all ages. If you choose to participate, the packet will include information to send to families and friends, a reading log based upon your age, and a sponsorship sheet with guidelines on how to collect pledges from your sponors.

Your goal should be to seek sponsors who can donate a certain amount of money for every book you read this summer. Remember prizes are awarded!

Proceeds raised through this event will benefit MDHC's effort to fill the service gaps for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, including our preschool and teen programs.

If you have any questions, or would like to request a Reading Race for Literacy reading log, please email us at mdhc@uch.edu

Great to see you at the Family Picnic

The family picnic was a huge success last weekend. Nearly 130 people showed up making it our largest family picnic to date.

The weather was beautiful and General's Park was teeming with families. Laughter could be heard from afar as the children spent time working on arts/crafts, blowing bubbles, and playing games with the other kids. Squeels of delight were noticed coming from the other Pavillion as the children took turns hitting the Pinata in hopes of being the one to break it open and send candy flying.

The Magician kept the families on their toes as he performed secret magic tricks and told thrilling jokes.

As always, the food was delicious! Thank you to each family for supplying a side to share.

A BIG thanks to Sertoma for donating a a majority of the food for the event and joining us on the day of to man the grills.

It was wonderful to see so many of you there. Photos have been posted from the Family Picnic on our Facebook Page, so if you have not already 'liked' us-be sure to do so and then check out the memories from such an incredible event.
