Our Groupon Grassroots Campaign
We've got some exciting news: We're teaming up with Groupon Grassroots, the philanthropic arm of
Groupon, to fund a project that impacts our community-coming soon!
Grassroots is a community outreach initiative within Groupon that brings people together to do
good, have fun, and create positive change in their community. With this initiative, we'll be aiming to
raise enough money to send 100 students to this year's Teen Day. Teen Day costs $50 a student, and it is our goal to fundraise enough money to send all our students to this program free of cost. Teen Day is an all-day event focused on preparing high school students who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) for life after high school. DHH high school students will learn about the community resources and technology available to them as they transition from high school to emerging adulthood. They will also meet DHH adult role models who have overcome their personal hearing loss obstacles to create successful personal and professional lives for themselves.
Since you are essential to our success, we want you to be the first to know about our campaign. It's
important that we build momentum for our campaign-here's how you can help:
1. Subscribe to Groupon in Denver before the
campaign launch. Click here to sign up.
2. Visit the Groupon site on Monday August 27th to Sunday September 2ndwhen the campaign launches.
3. Be the first to give by supporting Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teen Day and spread the word
to friends and family, encouraging them to do the same.

Qianna Granados-Aquino is a delightful 5-year-old girl with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. She was identified with her hearing loss shortly after birth through our newborn hearing screening program here at the Marion Downs Hearing Center. She was diagnosed with profound hearing loss and fit with hearing aids when she was only a few months old. It was later determined through imaging (CT scan) that Qianna had bilateral common cavity malformations of her inner ears.
After a year of hearing aid use, it was clear that hearing aids were not offering her enough access to sound. Her parents wanted Qianna to have the chance to hear and learn spoken language and opted to proceed with unilateral cochlear implantation at 14 months of age. They met with the MDHC Cochlear Implant Team several times to discuss this option and her potential for success. With the intense work and focus of her parents, early interventionists and speech language pathologists, Qianna is a successful cochlear implant user.
At 24 months of age, she received a cochlear implant for her second ear. She uses spoken English as her primary mode of communication and loves to wear her cochlear implants during every waking hour. Recently, she was able to upgrade to the new Nucleus 5 (CP810) sound processors and she was absolutely thrilled! She has been telling everyone about her "new implants" and is excited to show them off at school this year.
She is such an amazing little girl with two fantastic parents, Angelica and Mauricio! The Marion Downs Hearing Center is so very lucky to be able to work with such great kids and families!

Reading Race for Literacy 2012
Support the Marion Downs Hearing Center's Second Annual Reading Race for Literacy
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO START THE READING RACE!
June 1, 2012-October 1, 2012
Literacy is the cornerstone to education. Help us advocate for literacy in children and adults by joining us on this summer reading race. Reading Race for Literacy was created to raise awareness about literacy challenges among children with hearing loss as well as to fundraise to support the Marion Downs Hearing Center programs and services.
Reading Race for Literacy is open to all ages. If you choose to participate, the packet will include information to send to families and friends, a reading log based upon your age, and a sponsorship sheet with guidelines on how to collect pledges from your sponors.
Your goal should be to seek sponsors who can donate a certain amount of money for every book you read this summer. Remember prizes are awarded!
Proceeds raised through this event will benefit MDHC's effort to fill the service gaps for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, including our preschool and teen programs.
If you have any questions, or would like to request a Reading Race for Literacy reading log, please email us at mdhc@uch.edu
Thank you for your support.
