Meet Dr. Kristin Uhler | | |
Kristin Uhler, PhD practiced as a clinical Audiologist for years, during which time her clinical work inspired her to pursue her doctorate in the area of infant speech perception in deaf and hard-of-hearing children. She loves working with individuals of all ages and has a special interest in implantable hearing devices and the impact they have on speech understanding abilities. Her clinical knowledge, paired with her research interests, make her a great match for a clinical setting that practices evidence-based audiology and incorporates the latest research findings into daily practice. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University School of Medicine and adjunct faculty in the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Department at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
In her spare time, Kristin loves to spend time outside with her family and friends. One of her favorite activities is camping with her husband and 3 year old daughter, Scarlett.
Recently, Kristin's list of accomplishments has grown again. Just earlier this year, Kristin received an American Academy of Audiology New Investigator Grant for her research entitled 'Relationship between sensation level and optimal speech perception performance in hard of hearing infant'. She writes, "My interest in studying infant speech perception began when working as a clinical audiologist. I had the opportunity to work with children and their families diagnosed with hearing loss. While advances have been made in the treatment of children with hearing loss, a void continues to exist due to the lack of a clinical tool to assess infants and toddlers speech discrimination (i.e., speech perception). The assessment of speech perception is the standard of care for older children and adults and provides audiologists with important information necessary to plan habilitation and validate amplification settings. There is not a clinical assessment tool to assess speech perception abilities in children until they reach the developmental age of 2 ½-3 years of age. My research goals include the development and refinement of such a clinical tool".
Congratulations Kristin

Reading Race for Literacy 2012
Support the Marion Downs Hearing Center's Second Annual Reading Race for Literacy
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO START THE READING RACE!
June 1, 2012-October 1, 2012
Literacy is the cornerstone to education. Help us advocate for literacy in children and adults by joining us on this summer reading race. Reading Race for Literacy was created to raise awareness about literacy challenges among children with hearing loss as well as to fundraise to support the Marion Downs Hearing Center programs and services.
Reading Race for Literacy is open to all ages. If you choose to participate, the packet will include information to send to families and friends, a reading log based upon your age, and a sponsorship sheet with guidelines on how to collect pledges from your sponors.
Your goal should be to seek sponsors who can donate a certain amount of money for every book you read this summer. Remember prizes are awarded!
Proceeds raised through this event will benefit MDHC's effort to fill the service gaps for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, including our preschool and teen programs.
If you have any questions, or would like to request a Reading Race for Literacy reading log, please email us at mdhc@uch.edu
Thank you for your support.

Moments from Marion's Way Preschool
Marion's Way Preschool opened the doors to eight very eager children this summer. On June 19 parents and children alike were surprised to find that the classrooms had been transformed into a beach scene donning beach towels, umbrellas, and a clothsline weighed down by brightly colored swimsuits. The children will spend the first part of this summer immersed in a beach theme, and the second part in a camping theme. On Tuesday, the children learned to make ice-cream and enjoyed the cool treat on a hot summer day.
Teacher, Dianne Goberis shared a little bit of the excitement with us below. "On Tuesday, we met all of our new friends and got acquainted with our classroom and surroundings. The book we are using as our beach inspiration is Beach Day by Karen Roosa. We started the first day with making ice cream in a bag. Some of us made chocolate, some made vanilla and some made strawberry ice cream. Yummm!! It was a big hit with the hot weather. During the summer program, we learn lots of new songs. This week we sang, 'Slippery Fish'. The kids enjoyed being a slippery fish, an octopus, tuna fish, great white shark and a humongous whale. Thursday we went through a beach obstacle course working on fine and gross motor skills. We picked up shells on the beach, rolled up in towels, hung up swim suits to dry, pretended to swim in the ocean (laying on our tummies moving on scooter boards) and rowing a boat. We also made deviled eggs to take on a picnic for snack".
We will continue to share stories on our MDHC Facebook Page so visit us this summer if you would like to hear about the adventures of Marion's Way Preschool.
If you are interested in applying for next summer, or have any questions, please email us at mdhc@uch.edu |
