Support the Marion Downs Hearing Center's Second Annual Reading Race for Literacy

June 1, 2012-October 1, 2012

Literacy is the cornerstone to education. Help us advocate for literacy in children and adults by joining us on this summer reading race. Reading Race for Literacy was created to raise awareness about literacy challenges among children with hearing loss as well as to fundraise to support the Marion Downs Hearing Center programs and services.

Reading Race for Literacy is open to all ages. If you choose to participate, the packet will include information to send to families and friends, a reading log based upon your age, and a sponsorship sheet with guidelines on how to collect pledges from your sponors.

Your goal should be to seek sponsors who can donate a certain amount of money for every book you read this summer. Remember prizes are awarded!

Proceeds raised through this event will benefit MDHC's effort to fill the service gaps for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, including our preschool and teen programs.

If you have any questions, or would like to request a Reading Race for Literacy reading log, please email us at mdhc@uch.edu

Thank you for your support.

Join our Walk 4 Hearing Team!

Sign up to join the Marion Downs Hearing Center 'Walk 4 Hearing' Team! If you sign up to walk on our team, 40% of the money you raise goes directly back into the Marion Downs Hearing Center programs.

The 5K walk takes place May 19, 2012 at Clement Park, 7306 W. Boweles Ave., Littleton, CO.

Registration opens at 9:00 AM and the Walk begins at 10:00 AM.

The Walk 4 Hearing is the largest walk for hearing in America. Every spring and fall thousands of walkers-children and their families, young adults, young at heart, and everyone in between-form teams and walk in their communities to raise money for programs and services for people with hearing loss and to increase public awareness.

Why should you support our MDHC Team?

Because 36 million Americans have hearing loss and they do not know where to turn for help, or how to adjust to living with a hearing loss.

When somsone has a hearing loss, it affects everyone they interact with-family, co-workers, neighbors, friends-we all need to understand the impact hearing loss has on self esteem and lifestyle and how to communicate with someone who has a hearing loss.

Meet Paula Thompson
The 'ASL in Action' Teacher

Paula was born in Southern California and moved toColorado in 1981. Married in 1988 to a childhood friend turned Navy Officer, Paula moved many times throughout the U.S.

In 2000 Paula was diagnosed with a rare, life threatening tumor on her left vagus nerve. The surgery left her with extensive nerve damage on the left side of her face, neck, and left vocal fold- thus leaving her to speak with a permanent whisper.  It was at this point that she decided to learn to sign as a way to communicate.  Two years and three surgeries later, with the aid of a Gortex prosthetic, her voice was restored to near normal but still sounded fairly soft.  At that point she furthered her studies into American Sign Language by attending Oklahoma State University's Interpreter Training Program in Oklahoma City, graduating at the top of her class with a 3.9 GPA.

Paula currently is a Colorado Authorized Educational Interpreter as well as an Oklahoma Approved Educational Interpreter. Having lived in a world based on auditory communication yet being unable to communicate she now has a strong opinion about the use of signed communication.

We are lucky to have Paula Thompson as our American Sign Language teacher. Paula is more than a teacher to us, she is invested in the mission of the Marion Downs Hearing Center.

Paula is the teacher of our 'ASL in Action' Workshop. This class will begin Tuesday May 29th, and will last four weeks!
