Like Father, Like Son: A Family Benefits from Cochlear Implant Technology

Mr. Weed's CI
Father and Son look over Herb's new cochlear implant equipment with Mrs. Ginny Lupo.
Last year, Preston Weed received a cochlear implant because, he jokes, "my wife got tired of me turning up the volume on the TV!" Over the next few months, Preston started to enjoy talking on the telephone with this grandchildren and discovered a new world of sounds ("I didn't know elevators dinged!").

As Preston embarked on his journey, Mr. Herb Weed, Sr., was closely watching. Like his son, Herb experienced hearing loss most of his life and wore hearing aids. And, also like his son's wife, Herb's wife was complaining more often about the television volume. Inspired by his son's new found confidence and higher functionality, Herb decided to get a cochlear implant as well.

On "activation day" (the day the implant is turned on by the audiologist), Herb had to learn how to handle the equipment. Virginia Lupo, MS, guided Herb's hands to his head and assisted him with placing the magnet in the correct spot and laying the processor on the ear. Next, she showed him how to change the batteries and explained the different accessories that were included. Not only do our patients have to re-learn sound, they also have to learn how to use the equipment properly.

When first turned on, Herb described sounds as "echoy" but they quickly evolved over the two-hour appointment. At the end, before leaving, he was asked again how it sounds, Herb smiled and very simply said, "good." His son sat next to him, beaming, and it was a special moment to witness father and son sharing an incredibly unique, personal experience.

Nearly two months after this day, Mrs. Lupo excitedly reports that Herb, "...had his hearing test thresholds right where we want them to be, giving him good audibility for speech across all frequencies.  His speech discrimination was even more amazing.  He got 88% of the words in the sentences (up from 38% before the cochlear implant) and 78% of the challenging single words in isolation (up from 14% before the cochlear implant). I'm so excited to watch his progress!"
