| Kids in the Clinic
For children, it can get repetitive, boring, and sometimes anxiety-provoking when it is time for the next audiology visit. We ask a lot of children during these visits. They have to sit still on a chair in a small room, wear headphones or have things stuck in their ears, focus intently on hearing beeps and comply with repeating back words, and so on and so on. "Baseball, ice cream, cowboy...."
Shannon Burns, the MDHC pediatrics audiologist, makes it easier and so much more fun for these kids. Parents can't help but smile as she squats down to the floor to eye-level of their children, smothers them in bear hugs and fusses over how much taller/cuter/more handsome they've gotten in the last few months. She jokes with them, praises them when they respond in the booth, and is endlessly patient when they've just had enough. When the appointment is over, she treats them with a special toy or sticker on their way out.
Over time, most kids can't help but look forward to seeing Shannon. Her infectious smile and genuine love for her work changes an appointment with an audiologist to a visit with a friend.
To make an appointment for your child with Shannon Burns, call us at 720-848-2800.

Jim Detterline Inspires Conference Attendees
Those in attendance at the Saturday, September 24 "Consumer Hearing Loss Workhop - A Journey With Hearing Loss" had an opportunity to listen to the stories and adventures of Jim Detterline, former Rocky Mountain National Park Ranger and Search and Rescue expert. As he clicked through pictures of himself scaling massive rock walls, horseback riding through the wilderness, and white water rafting in intense rapids, he pointed out how his hearing aids enabled him to pursue practically any adventure throughout his life. His hearing aids have withstood the elements of nature, middle-of-the-night search and rescue attempts, and endured being stuffed in helmets as he skied down fresh powder mountains. Jim credits his primary audiologist, Dr. Sandra Gabbard, Co-Director of the Marion Downs Hearing Center, for enthusiastically finding creative and innovative ways for him to enjoy his lifestyle with the benefit of hearing aids. His stories and attitude are an inspiration to everyone that hearing loss should not limit your life in any way.
As always, we thank our wonderful partners, Hearing Loss Association of America, for a wonderful joint event! |
MDHC Staff Spotlight
When Ariel Price, one of our clinic Care Team Assistant (CTA) graduated with her BA in Sociology, she knew she wanted to develop a career focused on helping others. After brief positions working in a library and in human resources, she was thrilled to be hired as a CTA in the Audiology/ENT clinics.
Over the past year, Ariel has enjoyed the various challenges of her role. As the first staff member a patient often interacts with, Ariel takes great pride in helping as much as she can within her scope. She helps patients troubleshoot insurance issues, follows up with them on necessary appointments, and redirects them to appropriate resources as needed. "It is very difficult to deal with patients who have serious medical conditions but no insurance or means to pay, and we can't see them." But in those instances, Ariel works hard to find them an alternate resource. She is persistent. Earlier this year, she spent two months working closely with a patient with an incorrect diagnosis on her medical record. As needed, Ariel patiently called and followed up with various individuals to rectify her paperwork.
Ariel is a great asset to our team. Susan Mirabito, Audiology and ENT Practice Manager and Ariel's supervisor, reports that "...she is upbeat, positive, and always striving to provide excellent customer service to our patients." Ariel has enjoyed her position with the clinic and hopes to continue moving up in health care administration over the next five years. She plans to pursue a Master's degree in Hospital Administration. |
