MDHC Leading Research Study on First Fully Implantable Microphone for Cochlear Implants

The Marion Downs Hearing Center Audiology Department and University of Colorado Hospital Otolaryngology Department are jointly conducting a trail of an experimental implantable microphone for use with cochlear implants. This experimental microphone has been used in more than 300 middle ear implant recipients, including more than 25 recipients who received their implant at the University of Colorado Hospital. The trial sponsors, Otologics, LLC and Cochlear Americas, are evaluating this microphone technology with the goal of possibly incorporating the technology in a future fully implantable cochlear implant system. This feasibility study will continue for the next year and hopefully bring the field one step closer to the long-term goal of a fully implantable cochlear implant!
