Volunteer Excels in Newborn Hearing Screening Program
A year and a half ago, Ellie Benitez was looking for volunteer opportunities with direct patient interaction, preferably with children. When she heard about the Newborn Hearing Screening program at University of Colorado Hospital, she immediately applied for a volunteer position. A year and a half later, Ellie has emerged as one of the program's outstanding volunteers. A 2009 graduate from University of Colorado Denver, Ellie was recently accepted into the post-baccalaureate program in which she will complete two semesters of coursework before beginning medical school in 2011 at University of Colorado Denver. She views her time in the nursery screening babies for hearing loss as valuable experience that will help her transition to a career in medicine.
If left undetected, hearing loss can cause significant speech and language delays in children which in turn affects academic achievement as well as social and emotional development. However, diagnosing hearing loss in infancy can possibly avoid many, if not all, of these negative impacts.
Marion Downs realized this fact when she was practicing Audiology in the 1950s and 1960s. Her report in 1964 on Identification Audiometry in Neonates introduced the possibilities of newborn screening. Since 1960, Marion Downs made the case for newborn hearing screenings in lectures and in reports. In the late 1970s, the University of Colorado Hospital adopted a program that screened infant hearing in the newborn nursery - the first hospital in the world to do this. Today, all states and territories have some sort of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program in place with most having state legislations requiring hearing screenings at birth. With 1 out of every 300 infants being born with permanent hearing loss, our Newborn Hearing Screening program is one of our most important efforts!
Each time Ellie enters the room of parents with a new infant just days old, she is mindful of the impact she is making. She knows the difference early intervention can make and is proud to be a part of the process. Besides, "babies make me happy" she shares, with her eyes sparkling as she quietly knocks on a patient's door.
"Hi, my name is Ellie and if it is ok with you, I'm here to screen your baby's hearing. Congratulations on your new child," she says, smiling, as she enters the room.

MDHC Spotlight

When Barbie Bell, Audiologist, joined the MDHC team last year, she brought with her 24 years of clinical experience primarily in private practices throughout Colorado. She started her career in a teaching hospital in Los Angeles and wanted to return to that type of environment. When asked why she sought a position at the Marion Downs Hearing Center, she stated, "I really enjoy being involved in research and supervising students - I wanted to be in an environment where I could expand my clinical knowledge again."
As an undergraduate student at University of Santa Barbara, Barbie started out in the Speech Pathology program but found herself gravitating toward the scientific and diagnostic aspects of her audiologist coursework. She changed her career focus and completed an MA in Audiology from University of Northern Colorado in 1985, followed by an AuD from Central Michigan University in 2007.
Barbie's specialty as a member of the MDHC team is working with hearing aids, primarily with adults. She has always been fascinated by the fitting process of a hearing aid, using probe microphones to collect objective data about the performance of a certain hearing aid while it is in a patient's ear. She appreciates the challenges of transferring a hearing aid's performance from a rigid laboratory setting to a patient's ear and looking for what she refers to as the human link. "I think it is an art...there is a lot of science behind the development of a hearing aid but the trick is figuring out how to match that hearing aid's performance to an individual's lifestyle," she says.
When she is not busy being an Audiologist, Barbie is busy being a mom to her two daughters, ages 10 and 11. Together with her husband of 16 years, Bud, they take their family on camping trips and exploring the great outdoors. Barbie also loves the theater and curling up with a good book. |
