"No one has ever become poor by giving."
-Anne Frank
Greetings!

Despite the tendancy to eat too much, huge mall crowds, and endless holiday songs on the radio, we think the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas season brings out the best in people. As a nonprofit organization, we feel that serving others and giving to the community ranks as #1 on our list of priorities.

In this season of giving, we celebrate what we do best: supporting those with hearing loss and their families. We accomplish this on an individual level through donated technology. We accomplish this on a community level by hosting events that bring families together through the common bond of hearing loss. But we don't do this alone.

When our friends and supporters  give back to the MDHC, the cycle of giving comes full circle. We are fortunate to have generous individuals on our Foundation Board, grateful patients, and invested community partners. We're thankful to those who passionately believe in our mission and show it through service hours and gifts. We are thankful for YOU!

Happy Holidays!

MDHC Donates Hearing Aids
Teenager Receives New Hearing Aids
dontaed HA
On November 18, a 13-year old with moderate hearing loss was the recipient of donated hearing aids at the Marion Downs Hearing Center. Mario, an 8th grader at West Middle School in Aurora, Colorado, received the first pair of hearing aids he has ever owned. Diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of 4, Mario's family insurance would never cover the cost of brand new hearing aids. Therefore, he has always worn loaner hearing aids from our clinic with dated technology and big full-shell ear molds. As a honor roll student with strong personal motivation to hear well, Mario was selected to receive new Widex Aikia hearing aids this month!

The Widex Aikias are the most high-tech hearing aids Marion has ever worn. They're also the most aesthetically appealing with their small, discreet aid and open fit ear molds.

The hearing aids were generously donated by Widex for the MDHC 2009 Wine & Chocolate Fundraising Silent Auction. The aids were than auctioned off and donated back to the Marion Downs Hearing Center to be fitted with an appropriate patient. Thank you to Widex and our generous MDHC friend for making this possible!
Year Round Friends of MDHC
The saying, "it takes a village" definitely applies to the MDHC. Our small staff is responsible for developing, maintaining, and coordinating several programs and events throughout the year. We rely heavily on volunteers, grateful patients and community supporters to pull it all off! These are just a few examples of the "village" involved in making everything we do here at the MDHC possible:

VOLUNTEERS
The MDHC benefits from many volunteer hours each week. Our volunteers are involved in projects ranging from administrative office work, supporting special events, and filing newborn screening audiograms in the clinic. We are so grateful for the dedication of these special individuals!

GRATEFUL PATIENTS
The father of a toddler who received cochlear implants was so grateful to our team, he wanted to give back in some way. He gives back in the form of hot dogs, cookies, and snacks galore! This grateful father's employer is a food vending company and he arranged to have food items donated for our special events. Thank you for helping us save costs on food so we can continue to offer our events!

COMMUNITY SUPPORTERS
The Sertoma Clubs exist to provide civic service to their communities around the country. Two of our Foundation Board members are involved in the Platte Canyon Sertoma Club and have successfully recruited the group to support the MDHC in various projects. They have sponsored family events and fundraising events for us throughout the years. Thank you to the invested members of the Sertoma Clubs!
MDHC Foundation Board Members Donate Furniture
The Marion Downs Hearing Center Foundation Board, as a group, is responsible for helping us raise needed funds to support the programs and services of the Marion Downs Hearing Center. Even an individual basis, the members give back to the Center in many different ways, least of which is their generous donation of time. They give in other ways as well...

This month, our President, Cheryl Johnson, donated two pieces of matching wood furniture: a large credenza and a shelving system. A few months ago, another board member donated a new flat screen television. With our "house" being used for everything from sign language classes to holiday parties to conference space, we are in need of many items to maximize the use of each room. Thank you to our board members for generously donating new and gently used items to the Center!

If you'd like to make an in-kind donation or clear up some space in your basement, consider c0ntacting us to see if we can take it off your hands!

Donate Your Gently Used Hearing Technology
Our audiologists work with many patients who do not have the means to purchase the hearing technology they need. In the best circumstances, we're able to fit patients with temporary loaner hearing aids or obtain donated hearing aids from other organizations. But unfortunately, some go without the technology they need, or put off needed upgrades as their hearing loss changes.

What do you do with your old hearing aids? How about that amplified phone that is collecting dust on your desk? What about the personal FM system you no longer use?

Consider donating your old hearing technology to the Marion Downs Hearing Center for others to use. Your tax-deductible donation will provide needy individuals with hearing loss with more access to sound. Contact us at mdhc@uch.edu or 720-848-3042 for additional information or guidelines on your donation.
