Greetings!
The first day of Spring was on March 20 and we've got a busy one ahead of us! April will be dedicated to planning the events for "Better Hearing Month" in May. We are very excited about one event in particular, a bookfair fundraiser at Barnes and Nobel!
We are also excited to announce that our first sign language class is well underway and due to its popularity, we're adding two more series to our schedule! Read on for all this and more. Happy Spring!
Sincerely,
MDHC Staff

MDHC Sign Language Class is Popular! |
|
 |
Two Classes Added
Our first sign language class features 17 individuals with very different backgrounds. We have a couple of pre-K teachers; an audiologist; mothers of austic children; a husband suffering from Meniere's and his devoted wife; grandmothers of deaf grandchildren; and a young adult with cerebral palsy who wants to learn sign language in order to communicate better with his hard of hearing friends. With such a diverse group of students, class has been fun and engaging! In just three weeks, we've covered the alphabet, numbers, colors, measurements, and basic phrases!
Due to popular demand, two additional series of sign language classes are being offered at the MDHC:
April Series Mondays, April 13 through July 6, 4-6pm
July Series
Wednesdays, July 8 through September 23, 4-6pm
Tuition
$120, includes book

From A Consumer's Perspective... |

My Cochlear Implant Journey
Growing up, some of my friends affectionately described parts of my vocabulary as "Becky words." Until someone corrected me in middle school, I always thought the word "herb" was pronounced with an emphasis on the letter h. I never knew it was silent! Cello was "shello" and chocolate was "shocolate."
Almost two years after receiving my 1st cochlear implant, I can clearly distinguish between those softs sounds. I can do a LOT more now with a CI than I could do with bilateral hearing aids. Next week, on March 25, I will recieve my 2nd implant at the Marion Downs Hearing Center. I alternate between feelings of excitement and anxiety as the surgery date nears.
There can be a lot of confusion and wrong assumptions about the purpose of a cochlear implant and what it can do for someone with profound hearing loss, like myself. To share my experience and help others understand what I was (am!) going through, I began blogging.
Follow the link below to read more about my journey, beginning with the days leading up to my first cochlear implant, and now with my 2nd just around the corner! (To start at the beginning, select "2007" on the right and scroll all the way down to the bottom.
