GOOD 'TIL THE LAST DROP: Tips for Saving Water in Your Home
In 2008, Mile High Youth Corps installed 1,817 high efficiency toilets in low-income homes, saving over 7 million gallons of water. Want to save a few drops yourself? Try these simple suggestions from Denver Water:
- Turn off the water while shaving, brushing your teeth and lathering in the shower.
- Flush toilets only when necessary. Try two fewer flushes a day.
- Wash produce in a bowl rather than letting the water run. Use leftover water on house plants.
- Defrost food in the fridge, not in a pan of water on the counter or in the sink. Besides saving water, it's less likely to breed bacteria.
- Run garbage disposals only when necessary. Compost your food waste instead. |

ALL IN THE FAMILY: MHYC Brothers Excel in 2008 YouthBuild Program |
|
Xavier and Robert Jennings joined MHYC's YouthBuild Program in the summer of 2008, hoping to change their destructive "street" lifestyles, maintain a job and earn a GED. After successfully completing the program last month, the two brothers reflect on their time at the Corps, their relationship and plans for the future.
What was it like working together in YouthBuild? "It was amazing to work with my brother. We challenged each other to make it through each day. I don't think either one of us would have finished without the other." Xavier
What have you learned from your brother? "Xavier's taught me how to maintain my focus and stay strong." Robert
What do you hope your family and friends see in you and your brother?
"I hope people see maturity and independence in both me and Rob." Xavier
How are you similar to your brother? Different?
"Our personalities are similar and we enjoy many of the same activities." Robert
"We differ because his room is neat and organized and mine is usually messy." Xavier
What are your next steps?
"I start classes at the Community College of Denver this month." Xavier
"I'm excited to go to trade school and start working." Robert |
