Bright Idea! MHYC Starts Mass Production of Energy Conservation Kits
Mile High Youth Corps has partnered with The Governor's Energy Office (GEO) to produce 20,000 Energy Conservation Kits in an outreach effort for low-income residents of Colorado. The kits offer a chance for GEO and MHYC to extend energy savings and weatherization services to clients outside the Denver metro area. "These kits help offset high winter-time energy rates by providing direct services and energy conservation education," said Joseph Pereira, the project coordinator for the Energy Conservation Project.
Each kit contains multiple-wattage Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), a high-efficiency showerhead, aerators for bathroom and kitchen sinks, client education materials and a DVD from Xcel Energy. If you'd like to purchase a home energy kit to support the Corps and to help conserve energy in your home this winter, contact Anna Black at annab@mhyc.net or 303.433.1206 (opt. 1, x344).
Additional Energy Savings Tips from GEO
- Purchase an adjustable thermostat. During the winter months, set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower when you are home. While you're away, set it at 60 degrees or lower.
- Save your dirty laundry or dishes until you have a full load to clean in the washing machine or dishwasher. Avoid clothes dryers by purchasing a drying rack.
- Refrigerators often keep food so cold that produce freezes and ice cream is too hard to scoop. Adjust the temperatures to be 38 degrees in the fridge and +5 degrees in the freezer.
