...brought to you by the JLTV News Department
On this day in 1874, politician, philosopher and novelist Benjamin Disraeli (b. 1804 - d. 1881) replaced William Gladstone as Prime Minister of Great Britain. Disraeli was born Jewish, descending from Portuguese Jews, but his father had him baptized at the age of 12. The conversion resulted from a dispute the elder Disraeli had with a local synagogue. Since he had been baptized in the Anglican faith, Disraeli was not limited by English law to pursue a career in politics. Nevertheless, he remained a target of anti-Semitic barbs and ultimately expressed pride over his Jewish heritage.
