...brought to you by the JLTV News Department
Published February 7,1898
On January 13, 1898, influential French Novelist Emile Zola published "J'accuse" on the front page of a Paris daily. In this open letter to the French President, Zola accused the French government of anti-Semitism in the "Dreyfus Affair." On this day in 1898, Zola was put on trial for libel for publishing the letter. Zola was convicted on February 23, 1898, but fled to England to escape imprisonment. Regardless of this conviction, Zola's "J'accuse" served as a major turning point in the Dreyfus Affair. Alfred Dreyfus was ultimately exonerated of espionage by the French Supreme Court. Emile Zola died in 1902 of carbon monoxide poisoning under what some believe were suspicious circumstances.
