JLTV's Parent Company Celebrates Its 45th Anniversary
JLTV's parent company, Blazer Media Group (BMG), was founded 45 years ago by Phil Blazer, and by virtue of being in the forefront of Jewish community activism for more than four decades, it has affected social change in America and around the world. One of the peak moments of BMG was its involvement in the rescue of nearly 1,000 Ethiopian Jews from refugee camps in the Sudan to freedom in Israel. The rescue, code-named Operation Joshua, was performed by the U.S. Government with BMG as a key catalyst. Several decades ago, in order to react to a wave of racism in the Chicago village of Skokie, we organized 200 Jews and Christians to fly from Los Angeles to this town, highly populated by Holocaust survivors, resulting in a national campaign of positive response. From this piece of American history, the film Skokie, starring Danny Kaye, was produced. BMG also hosted Hollywood celebrities on important trips to Israel, including Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ben Kingsley, Phyllis Diller, and others. JLTV spearheaded the exclusive U.S. broadcast of the Jewish Olympics (the Maccabiah Games) last summer and has built a library of over 2,000 hours of Jewish TV content. BMG's outreach began in 1965 with its weekly radio program and has been transformed into a 24/7 full-time Internet station: www.bigjradio.com. The Jewish News, which began publishing in 1973, is now the official publication of JLTV. Its weekly Jewish Life TV program began broadcasting on KSCI-TV in Los Angeles in 1977 and aired consistently for 32 years, the longest running TV program in the entertainment capitol of the world. This has now evolved into "America's Chosen Network."
