JLTV Congratulates Strong Position Taken By Members of the Tennis World
Worldwide outrage in reaction to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) denial of a visa to Israeli tennis professional Shahar Peer has elicited tremendous response. As reported by JLTV's Sports Department, the blatant discrimination of the UAE against the Israeli tennis player violated the letter and spirit of the bylaws of the WTA (Women's Tennis Association), the governing body for women's professional tennis and general decency. JLTV has expressed its deep appreciation to American player Andy Roddick, last year's winner in Dubai. Roddick clearly withdrew from the tournament to protest the UAE's exclusion of Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer. JLTV also congratulates the Wall Street Journal (Europe) for withdrawing its sponsorship and canceling a tennis-themed advertising section, and the Tennis Channel for pulling its broadcast of the tournament. To strengthen the penalty message to the UAE, Larry Scott, the Chairman and CEO of the Sony Ericsson Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, announced a $300,000 fine against the Dubai organizers-the largest ever levied. Scott commented, "The actions taken today (February 20) are intended to redress the wrongs suffered by Shahar Peer, who was victimized by an unjust policy of discrimination by the UAE." JLTV is still awaiting response from two other commercial sponsors, Barclay's Bank and Rolex, which to date have not taken a stand against Dubai's discrimination. Worldwide response demands that these corporate giants take a leadership position on human rights issues and stand up against racism, especially in competitive sports. Shahar Peer is a major sports celebrity in Israel, a role model for many young people seeking to achieve sports recognition. JLTV televised Shahar Peer's match in 2008 from the Israel Tennis Centers Festival in Ramat Hasharon. This event will be re-broadcast on JLTV this Sunday, March 1 at noon Eastern Time.
