Cashing in on Arizona's Solar Resources
On April 3, 2012 the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) and Arizona Public Service (APS) announced plans for a 35 megawatt solar power plant in Yuma County. This marks the first solar development lease on Arizona state trust lands and was followed by a second lease announcement for a project west of Phoenix.
The Yuma project, Foothills Solar Plant, will occupy 400 acres of state trust land that APS will lease for 35 years generating in excess of $10 million for the Trust. The ASLD identified the site as suitable for solar development as did APS' own independent assessment. The property is sandy and barren and has not been previously leased for other purposes. The solar lease presents an opportunity for significant revenues to the beneficiaries, primarily k-12 public schools, and will help diversify ASLD's earnings. The second lease, to solar developer Arlington Valley Solar Energy II, is for a 125-megawatt project with 24-megawatts situated on state trust land. Both projects are scheduled to begin construction during August, 2012. View the APS news release, and read the article in the Arizona Republic for additional information. |
