Greetings!

Throughout the country, communities are experiencing higher than average temperatures. Warmer weather in spring may seem fortuitous to some but, as we know in warmer western climates, these changes indicate that summer is just around the corner.

Coupling rising temperatures with higher surface temperatures has the potential to render many areas within the Intermountain West uncomfortable, if not dangerous without aggressive air conditioning use and consequent increases in energy consumption. As is often the case, the risks associated with higher temperatures impact the most sensitive populations, including children, the elderly, those with health conditions and low-income residents.

To call attention to these recent warming trends, in this issue of Fetch! we are featuring two SCOTie case studies that deal with mitigating the impacts of extreme heat: City of Phoenix Heat Relief Network and City of Las Vegas Urban Forestry Resolution

Phoenix, AZ Heat Relief Network

Leveraging regional networks, community and faith-based organizations, the City of Phoenix has implemented an initiative to curb the incidences of heat related fatalities using a program called the Heat Relief Network.

The Heat Relief Network uses a three-pronged approach: Hydration, Heat Refuge and Wellness Checks. Read more ...

Las Vegas, NV Urban Forestry Resolution

Urban forests not only increase property values and quality of life for residents, they offer relief from the urban heat island and reduce energy use by cooling homes and businesses.

The Las Vegas Urban Forestry Resolution is the first action in a three-part effort to reduce the Las Vegas urban heat island.

In addition to new case studies and resources, we added two new partners to the SCOTie effort: Western Planner and the Arizona Cooperative Extension. Welcome and congratulations!

April 13-17, 2012 SCOTie and Western Lands and Communities will be at the National Planning Conference in Los Angeles. Stop by our booth for special prize giveaways and learn more about our programs.

Happy planning!
