Happy New Year!
SCOTie partners have been hard at work providing communities with valuable planning tools and information. Check in on SCOTie to find new tools and links in the resources section as well as recently added case studies.
The Healthy Community Design Collaborative released the Healthy Community Design Toolkit to support efforts to create healthier communities using the general plan update process. This collaboration provides example ordinances, sample language as well a robust resource section that features an extensive compilation of websites, organizations and publications that communities can use to educate their community and incorporate healthy community design policies into General/Comprehensive plans.
Idaho Smart Growth released the Citizen's Guide , a resource for citizens interested in helping shape the future of their communities and for those concerned about a specific land use or transportation proposal. This guide provides information on land use and transportation planning in Idaho and smart growth and offers suggestions concerning steps citizens can take to get more involved.
Our case study database has also expanded with new content and a more robust resources section.
New case studies on water conservation strategies, wind energy conversion systems, mining permitting and innovative general plans have been recently uploaded. Keep sending us information on new ordinances, plans and policies to share with other communities.
Below are just a few of the newest case studies added to SCOTie. |

Through an early public engagement, the County of Lincoln, NM was able to successfully pass a Wind Energy Conversion Systems Ordinance quickly and with fewer hurdles.
This ordinance was necessary for the county to remain consistent with their land use policies, minimize the negative impacts of wind power, and establish a fair and efficient process for review and approval of applications.

Flagstaff, AZ Water Conservation Strategies
To decrease water usage, prevent declines in water resources, and circumvent rising pumping costs, the City of Flagstaff implemented a strict ordinance that supports their water conservation goals.
