Friends,
Join Us for a Conservation Win on November 2nd
The Sonoran Institute has joined forces with a diverse group of Arizonans who are enthusiastically supporting Arizona's Proposition 110. Also called the Arizona State Trust Lands Question, Proposition 110 is on the ballot in November. Prop 110 Background This proposition will authorize land exchanges between the Arizona state land department and the federal government. The purpose of these land exchanges is to protect Arizona's military facilities and flight paths and to promote proper management, protection and public use of Arizona state trust lands. It has several excellent provisions to protect and advance the public interest by requiring that voters must specifically approve all proposed exchanges by referendum. Proposition 110 does not authorize land exchanges with private landowners - only exchanges between the state and federal governments. Land Management Opportunities
This Proposition balances the need for environmental sustainability with the need for economic sustainability. Arizona's military industry has created more than 30,000 Arizona jobs, over $9 billion dollars in economic activity and hundreds of millions of dollars in state and local tax revenue every year. All Arizonans directly benefit with the passage of this Proposition; especially citizens close to Luke Air Force Base, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Yuma Proving Ground and Fort Huachuca, whose long-term viability is threatened by surrounding land uses.
Prop 110 provides a tool for effective and efficient land management. Additionally, the difficult and challenging checkerboard pattern of state, federal and private land could also be resolved with the passage of Proposition 110.
A 'Real Winner" Attracts A Large Group of Supporters Prop 110 has gained support from across the political spectrum: conservation groups such as Grand Canyon Trust, Sierra Club, and Sonoran Institute; business groups such as Valley Partnership and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce; military support groups such as the Fighter Country Partnership and DM-50, and the Arizona League of Cities and Towns. In an editorial on October 7th, the Arizona Republic stated, "Voters can say "yes" with confidence to this ballot measure, which is so well drafted that it has support from all sides, including business interests, education groups and conservation advocates who staunchly opposed previous land-exchange proposals. Prop. 110.... is a real winner. Voters should say "yes."" Please join our broad coalition of statewide supporters in voting YES on Proposition 110!
