The Sonoran Institute secures conservation results!
Whether it's educating concerned citizens in Arizona about the challenges and opportunities of managing water in an arid landscape, or helping communities in Colorado develop cleaner energy alternatives, our unique brand of collaborative conservation and local engagement is preserving open space in the West and encouraging responsible growth.
In 2009, the Institute helped Montana and Wyoming enact new growth-management laws that will significantly improve land-use planning. In Colorado, we helped the State pass important new transportation reforms, including more funding for their Complete Streets program and the formal establishment of a Division of Transit and Rail within the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Our Western Counties Action Network has become an influential voice for county commissioners and city officials advocating for key state and federal conservation initiatives, and for the effective implementation of smart-growth policies.
The Institute is also actively working with the federal governments of Mexico and the United States to change a treaty to help secure consistent water flows into the Colorado River Delta for important wetlands and wildlife restoration initiatives.
We hosted community-design workshops from Sheridan, Wyoming to Pinal County, Arizona. We also co-hosted two major conferences in the Northern Rockies, "Designing the New West," a regional gathering of architects and developers, and the biennial "Big Sky or Big Sprawl" conference - all designed to provide the education, tools and resources necessary to manage growth, preserve open landscapes and protect wildlife resources.
