The building is gone; the business is alive!
Sometime around 4:30 a.m. on January 25, 2008, Jim McGuirt, owner of Royal Trustworthy Hardware Store, received a phone call. The words he heard were devastating, but he wouldn't know just how much until he walked a quarter of a mile into the Town of Salemburg. He had been told that downtown Salemburg was on fire, and as he neared the blazes, he noticed that it was his business engulfed in fire. "It is a helpless feeling," said McGuirt. "There is nothing you can do but watch." McGuirt noted that he hurt not only for the loss of his store but for the history beneath the ashes. Royal Trustworthy Hardware was first opened in 1890 by C.S. Royal, who then passed the business to his son, C.A. Royal, Sr. The business remained in the family until 1992 when C.A. Royal, Jr. sold the business to Jim McGuirt and Tom Culp. In January 2006, McGuirt bought the business. The hardware store was the oldest business in Sampson County with a continuous operation. For years the store has been called the "heartbeat of Salemburg." The love this town had for the store was expressed through the outpour of support McGuirt received from the community as he was encouraged to rebuild his business. Mayor Strickland aided McGuirt in finding a new building to lease while other individuals and businesses labored and volunteered time to renovating what is now the new location for Royal Trustworthy Hardware. Within just four months of the fire, Royal Trustworthy Hardware was serving its customers again, and by July, McGuirt and his family were celebrating the official Grand Reopening with a Ribbon Cutting and Open House. Best of all, the business is performing as well as it did last year before the fire. With the struggles and challenges hopefully behind him and plenty of community support ahead, McGuirt is reminded that even in tragedy and disaster, there you may also find a "silver lining."

Businesses working together to help students get ahead
As local business leaders, we are all responsible for Sampson
County's financial future. As citizens we are responsible for Sampson
County's future as a safe and clean
place to live. Finally, as parents,
grand parents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters of the students of Sampson
County, we are responsible for
their future and showing them how bright it can be right here in North
Carolina's largest county.
The Sampson-Clinton Youth Industrial Council provides the business
leaders, citizens and parents of Sampson
County with a perfect opportunity
to help mold the future of its students. The council was organized with specific goals
in mind. We work diligently to:
· Strengthen the
confidence of our youth and their work ethic
· Assist students
in the establishment of occupational goals
· Facilitate the
transition from school to work
· Create an
interest in the understanding of American business enterprise
Membership in the Sampson-Clinton Youth Industrial Council
gives you the unique opportunity to work along side with Career Development
Councilors from Sampson County's
high schools and interact face-to-face with juniors and seniors as they prepare
to graduate and seek employment.
Your first opportunity to help will
be during the last weeks of August in 2008.
Business Partners of the Sampson-Clinton
Youth Industrial Council will be presenting to seniors in each of the city
and county high schools about the council, getting ready for the "real world,"
and the annual Career Fair that SCYIC holds each year. We are interested in finding presenters to
help us get the word out. If you're
interested in helping, please contact Jamie Thomas
at jthomas@hogslat.com or (910)
594-0219. It will be a minimal time
commitment that will provide great rewards for Sampson
County's students!
