Issue #2 April 2008
Greetings!

Mother's Day is just two weeks away.  It falls on Sunday May 11th this year.  Various forms of this holiday are observed around the world, and its history goes back hundreds of years.  But as observed in the United States, Mother's Day began during the Civil War and originally took form as a call for pacifism and activism, subjects of great significance to its founders.  Which brings us to this issue's message writing tip.
Tip #2:  Give it Significant Meaning

Rose No. 2 by Tara PavisWhen I was a child, my mother said to me "If you become a soldier, you will become a general.  If you become a monk, then you will end up as the Pope."  Instead, I became a painter, and wound up as Picasso.   Pablo Picasso

A card message can make a big statement in a small space.  The key is to imbue it with personally significant meaning.  You may have to do a little soul searching, but your reward is a strengthened connection to the person receiving the card.

I have a friend who is rightfully proud of the fact that he is largely self educated and has considerable knowledge on many subjects.  He is comfortable with most people and confident discussing most things.  He has traveled a long way from his humble beginnings and credits his growth to the hundreds of books he has read over the sixty plus years of his life.

This friend had a troubled relationship with his mother and once told me that even today, years after his mother's death, he can think of only one good thing to say about her.  And that is that she gave him his love of books and reading, a passion of hers that she passed on to him.  I trust he will one day discover a truth that he had not yet embraced when we had this conversation.  If written as a card message to his mother, it might read something like this:  You gave me my love of books and reading and helped make me the man I am today.  Thank you.

I have no system or easy steps to help you.  You have to find a way to focus your inward gaze beyond your mental blind spots to discover how a person has influenced your life.  Then state it simply, honestly, and with gratitude.  The meaning will not be lost on your reader.

I hope you find this helpful.
