There is an old saying: "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." It also makes them taste better according to Steven Colbert. Now I have never tested this saying or Steven's amendment in literal terms so I don't know if it's really true. In fact, I have heard balsamic will attract more flies than honey. Here is the video proof. Try it and let me know what you find.
Anyway, the point is that it's easier to persuade people if you are nice and polite than if you are confrontational. Honey is sweet. Vinegar is sour. Simple enough.
But how does this apply to us in business?
I guess that depends on who you want to attract. Who is your fly? Is it customers, employees, or the receptionist in suite 300 or the UPS guy? What is going to attract them to you and keep them?
For us, we want to catch more customers, so the honey is:
1. Experience,
2. Total focus on the client's needs, and
3. Ongoing service long after the sale.
We also want to catch new agents, so the honey is:
1. Training,
2. Higher-than-normal commissions,
3. Profit sharing potential,
4. Leads,
5. Progressive splits, the more you make, the more you keep,
6. No limit on income, and
7. Fun work environment.
