| Client Profile -
Abernethy Media Professionals |

It's been quite a ride for Sandy and Amy Lou Abernethy and they show no sign of stopping. They started their video production company, Abernethy Media Professionals (AMP), over their garage. Then they moved to several rented studio spaces. Now in their own building with a brand new studio, Sandy and Amy Lou along with a devoted team of talented producers, editors, and videographers are winning awards and accolades from clients and critics alike.
Film industry veterans, Sandy is an award winning director and director of photography while Amy Lou, a Dallas native and graduate of the University of North Texas, produces and writes. They started their business in 1998. One division provides crews and equipment for broadcast and corporate television, shooting all over Texas and across the southwest. Networks such as Comedy Central, HBO, Fox, ESPN and CNN, use AMP to provide the best local talent to crew their productions.

| Revised Franchise Tax - Will You Pay? |
Mark your calendars for April 23 at 7:30 AM. At that time, the Plano Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an informational session regarding the Revised Franchise Tax. State Representative James Keffer who authored the bill along with representatives from the State Comptroller's Office and a local CPA will be presenting information about how you may be taxed.
The revised tax law was passed by the legislature as part of their attempt to "reform" school finance. Property taxes went down as a result, but they made up for it by taxing businesses more broadly.
Come to the Chamber's office at 1200 East 15th Street at Municipal Street to learn how this will affect you.

The Lingo - "Sublease" & "Assignment" |
|
An assignment transfers all the rights and obligations of one party in a lease or contract to a third party.
If your company leases office space, for example, and you decide to sell the company, you will likely want to assign the lease to the buyer of the company. The new owner steps into the shoes of the prior owner and becomes bound to all the obligations as the tenant in the lease.
A sublease, on the other hand, transfers something less than all the rights and obligations. If any term is different than in the original lease, it is then a sublease. Everything can be the same except one thing (rent, size, term, etc.) which makes it a sublease.
A sublease document is usually signed and the original lease is attached as an exhibit. The landlord must consent to the sublease or assignment and the landlord may have the right to deny the transfer or may even be able to terminate the lease (See Recapture in the December issue of the BizLetter avaiilable in the archives below).
For other real estate terms, see the Glossary on Reata's website. |
