Client Profile - Legacy Consulting Group

Legacy Consulting logoSteve Martin used to tell a joke about how to make a million dollars.  "Well, first you get a million dollars..." was the punch line.  That was the late 70's when a million bucks was still worth something.

REALTORBut a million dollars won't put you in the league with these guys.  You'll need about $3 million in investable assets to qualify.

BizTip - Legal Aspects of Business

Thinking of starting a business but don't know where to start? Confused by all the different types of entities you could form for your business and wondering which type will be best?

Then you need to attend the Legal Aspects of Starting a Business class being offered this Wednesday, January 23, at the Small Business Development Center in Plano at 6:30 PM.

Already own a business and wondering whether you should have employees or independent contractors? How much and how often should you pay your employees? How do you protect your business assets?

There's a class for you too - Legal Aspects of Running a Business at 11:30 AM.

Both classes are taught by Terry Traveland of Traveland & Jiongo.  Terry is someone I can vouch for as she has been my attorney for 3 years and has also handled several of my clients.

Community - My Possibilities

REALTORJoseph is 22 years old and doesn't understand that he's too old to go to his "old" school.  All his friends are there so he doesn't understand why he can't go. You see Joseph has "aged out" of a school system which allows disabled people to remain in high school only until 21.  Then they are on their own.

Joseph is no isolated case.  There are over 14,000 adults ages 20-60 in Collin County alone with physical and/or mental disabilities.  Government funding is woefully inadequate for day programs.

On Sunday, January 27, a new program is being unveiled to address this situation.REALTOR

My Possibilities is a year-round, day program for adults with disabilities after they age out of the public school system.  Their mission is to provide a program of learning, independence skills and vocational training in a safe and nurturing environment for these adults who have few means to support themselves.

Reata is acting as an advisor to My Possibilities to find a permanent home for the program.

Please join us on Sunday, January 27, to learn more and visit what we hope will be the first My Possibilities center in Collin County. Come see what we can do together.  Click here for details.

We would love to hear from you in this New Year.  If you have any ideas for The Reata BizLetter, know of a cool business tool, or want us to address a topic, please let us know.  We want this to be useful to you and address issues of interest.  Thanks.

The Lingo - "Estoppel"

An estoppel is a document signed by a tenant at the request of the landlord which confirms the terms of the lease and that they are in effect with no default by either party. Estoppels are required by investors which buy buildings subject to leases and by lenders when they refinance a building. Leases are the documents which create value in buildings so buyers and lenders want to ensure that they are in full force and effect.

If you know someone who receives an estoppel, please have them contact their attorney. Or better yet, have them contact Reata.

For other real estate terms, see the Glossary on Reata's website.

Wouldn't it be nice to dictate a memo to someone, send a text message without having to type it out, or just send yourself a message while on the go?  Well that's now possible with CopyTalk or Jott.  Jott is a free service while CopyTalk is a paid service.  But then its service is more extensive.
